Best Battery set up

I am putting a P7 into a 3D maglite. What is the best power source option to acheive maximum lumens? Should it be driven direct using 3 Nimh D batteries or use a different rechargable power source with a driver and which will give the longest run time. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
