Title says it all. Where should I get my battery stick for my Stream Light SL-20X? Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Gary

ps....if you'd rather keep your answer off the board due to pricing issues, feel free to email me at [email protected]

Fox Intl has generic batteries for $10.95. They no longer list generic batteries under their Streamlight lights, but the SL-20X and the MagCharger both use the same battery. The generic is listed under their Mag batteries as item SAF-FOX-NCD-4. Do be aware that shipping is expensive these days, so you may want to look over their site to see if there are other items that you might want to lessen the impact of the shipping.

www.batterieswholesale.com sells replacement packs for MagCharger and SL-20X. These lights use a single stack of 5 1/2D cells. The positive end of the SL-20X need not have much of a nipple, but the MC definitely needs a certain height protrusion in order to contact the mating spring at the switch core.

If you're just going for a NiCd replacement, the StreamLight or MagCharger stock packs are actually pretty good. They are 2.5 AH packs and will stand up to the 4 amp draw of the 1160 lamp just fine.

The Aero pack (www.batterieswholesale.com) is a high quality, high rate capable, 3.8 AH NiMH pack that I highly recommend. Note that their webpage of 5 cell, 6.0 volt NiMH packs says that the pack is a 3.5 AH pack, but the last time people ordered any of these, they got a pack made from the 3.8 AH cells.

However, they are still not up and running, despite the fact that the webpage says that online ordering will be restored on "24 September". My friend CPF member Ginseng was actually doing testing of the 3.8 AH cells for Aero, and I called him to see if he had any inside information on what was going on--why there was no way to order, etc.--but I haven't heard back from him. I'll probably call him again sometime this week.

In any case, if there were enough interest, I believe that these Aero 3.8 AH cells are just the 3.8 AH cells available from www.powerstream.com. And they can make up custom packs. There is a $200 minimum order, however. But still that would only mean about 5 or 6 packs, so it might not be that hard to scare up that amount of interest.

Or we could just wait for BWS.com to come back online.

As for a replacement NiCd pack that only costs $11, I suggest that it would be a good idea to have someone check one of these out, do some testing, etc., and report back. Good NiCd cells aren't cheap, and it does take some amount of labor and materials to make a pack out them, so we're talking like $1 1/2D NiCd cells. That scares me.

Specifically with regards to the generic sticks from Fox-Intl, I've been using several of them for a couple of years now (they were originally $9.95). They seem to work fine, though I've never run a run-time test on them. Insofar as OEM Streamlight batteries are concerned, just about every police department in this area uses SL-20 series lights and most of the batteries that are in those lights are not OEM Streamlight, though with all of the municipalities in this area, there might be a couple that do use them. Even Streamlight dealers sell batteries that are not branded Streamlight (and they're the local resource for many of those PDs.)

Hard to tell. The current ones that I've been using for the last couple of years don't seem the worse for wear. I did get some from one of the other web vendors for police supplies where one of the batteries went south after about 2 years of usage, but I'd suspect that you can expect variations regardless of the brand (or lack thereof) of battery sticks.

Any difference in quality between the generic and the Streamlight brand?

Yes, they're 1/2D's

What kind of cells are they using in stack of 5 cells? Is it like a 1/2 D

ps.......if it matters, I'm running an SL-20X light body with the SL-35X bulb for increased brightness.

I'm not sure? The standard SL-20X battery is rated at 2500 so either way it appears this stick has more juice.

OK. Yes some people are familiar with this battery. Do a search for js, click on his threads. Find his latest thread on the SL20. A lot of info on the SL20 and what he has done with references to other links re the SL20. A whole lot of info on CPF but you have to do your own work to really find it.

JS,

I spent the last 1/2 hour searching your posts and could not find any references to this battery. :shakehead

Can you please help me out.

Regards,
Gary

Very good info on various upgrades to the SL-20X but nothing on that battery specifically. :sigh:

I will post a new thread for info on this battery.
