Just wondering if the SNII is still The King when it comes to throw among LED's.

I know the 3W have a smaller die and throw better than a 5W, but just wondered if the SNII was still the best in throw...

well, i believe the SNII's were maxing out around 7,000 lux or so, maybe some as high as 8,000. many lux3 mods lately have hit over the 10,000 lux mark.

True. I have a W2W, direct drive, 6AA batteries, in a 2D Maglite. . .and the TWAK set up the same way has a brighter hotspot. Better throw, for sure.

Your LuxIII setups will always out throw a 5W setup.
The 5W has greater overall output, but you cant focus it in as tight a beam as a LuxIII.

So, if you want max throw, go with a LuxIII Mag mod. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Lux III definately, I have owned two of Charlies SN U3 SE and W2 HD and built a X3 HD of my own. My dream SN would be a Lux III XWOJ ( yeah right!!) with a DB 917 as my sleeper light

Wayne seems pretty confident in his Blaster 3P. Prolly won't be as good a thrower as some mag mods out there, but I hope it's good.

I think there's reason to be hopeful.

The 30mm optic with a 3W throws. The mag reflector is more popular because of it's beam pattern. I like the mag reflector myself big fan of the sidespill (check my handle). Just wanted to mention the underated 30mm.

the mag reflector will yield about 9000-10000 lux the 30mm optic will yield 6000 lux or so

edit: these figures are with a 3 watt lux

that's quite a difference...at least in the numbers.
Is it enough of a difference to be visually noticeable as well?

It is a matter of Beam Shape.

I like the optic in my Starlux 3D 1W, but really like the M*g reflector in my SNII!

I look forward to getting some of the SOxx reflectors to play with, and LUST for a 3W M*g mod!
