I'm not sold on it either. The internet, both the good and bad, is what it is due to freedom. Regardless of it's structure, if freedom isn't preserved, its usefulness will be greatly diminished. But if freedom is preserved, bad things will continue to happen.

I suspect we'll end up with a hyrid of 2 or more systems. One will be more secure, for business to business comms, another will be for "public" consumption, and there will be a middle ground connecting the two. Businesses and national/global infrastructures need a far more secure net and will be willing to pay for it. The loss of freedom would be an acceptable constraint for them.
