Before Christmas ( Xmas for some ) BPS had a sale & I got me the D2 Beta .
Knife steel D2
Sale Price $53.10 USD to my door !
60/55HRC ( 60HRC file bites / 55HRC file skates )
Bevel angle is 18 degrees per side ( factory edge was nasty = I resharpened the knife )
Fail was @ 400 slices of rope , and quick N dirty wood strop had the knife slicing paper again ( apex deformation )
Again , purchased mine at SALE price , this Beta is probably the best BPS in the hand to date ( I have a few ) and the D2 is ok ! ( Especially at the price point )
The spine was ..... So I did re grind it a little to make it crispy . Knife really could do without the jimping as it interfered with the bushcraftyness of the knife . Jimping where you want a crisp edge = Bad Ju Ju . Scrapes wood , but not that well . On the ferro rod the knife is very good ( reground spine ) .
Also cutting wood , not the best . The edge tends to bounce a lot on uneven surfaces ( wood ) . Over all , better than other BPS knives . The 1066 BPS uses on it's regular production is some what ho hum and I would like to see them switch to 80cr . ( But that's just me )
The sheath ! Tek Lok = Not a fan . Not for belt use ... Needs a dangler system ! ( Maybe like on the Master Hunter Sheath )
Score out of 10 ? Maybe a 6.5 ( Just things that could be done better ) .
Factory edge was ? , spine was ? , Tek Lok is ? Fits the hand well , scrapes wood .. ? , cuts wood .. ? Edge retention .. 400 ( Lower D2 range )
And that jimping ... Why ? Do people have that much trouble holding onto their knives ? ( Not a jimping fan )
The bouncy slicing on wood could be the thickness behind the edge , it's not super critical . It's all the little things when combined that make a knife something special . I really wanted the BETA to be special , but unfortunately it's just kind of ordinary . ( Just a regular knife )
