Welcome to CandlePowerForums.

Ditto Mark Larson. If your local RS doesn't have KPR113s, ask the store to order them and ship to your home or work place...no shipping charges.

Other members may chime in with a few more good suggestions.

There are several threads in the Homemade and Modified forum on how to modify Mag but I can't recall the config. for a 4D. You might do a search on bulbs.

Hopefully, Rothrandir will see your post and have something to say. He is a well known Modifier and quite the friendly fellow.

Note XPR113 is halogen and is brighter than the krypton KPR.

Beyond that, you can look at Welch-Allyn superbulbs along with various alternative battery arrangements. You'll want to use a Carley aluminum reflector with the brightest bulbs, since the plastic Mag reflector has a tendency to melt.

Is it a significant improvement overt the bub that comes with the Mag 4D?

The XPR are xenon IIRC. The HPR are halogen. KPR are krypton. The XPR113 would be the brightest non-overdriven bulb. If you are willing to live on the edge, then drive an XPR103 on 4 cells. You stand a decent chance of not flashing and the OD xenon will give a nice white spot. The added benefit of these bulbs is a small filament leading to a tight hotspot.

AR15,
It'll be brighter but I don't think it'll knock your socks off. But then again, I'm jaded. My modded 3D makes the equivalent light output of over 35 stock 3Ds. The Carley and Welch Allyn stuff is the big boys.

Check out this thread for a nice table of available bulbs: Some bulbs

BTW, Welcome!

I use a halogen for 3 cells in a 4 cell Mag. Brightest package I have seen. Just be shure to keep a spare in the tailcap.

Thanks everyone!

I am using a magnum star xenon which is brighter than the HPR50, Sylvania krypton and way brighter than the mag krypton’s that I have. I’ll have to get the XPR113 bulb from radio shack too.

How much brighter and how much less reliable are the 3 cell bulbs in a 4D?

thanks.

I run 3 cell Krypton bulbs on 4C in several lights. That seems to be a fairly robust overdrive level, and is (with writeright or acrylite) a very nice blob of white light.

I have blown up too many Xenons to ever try to overdrive one. (Well, unless were talking Carley or WA of course!).

I also have a 4D Mag. Since the KPR113 and XPR113 have been discontinued by RS - any advice on what I can do to improve the stock bulb that came in my Mag about 3 years ago?

Thanks1

I don't know what bulb yours came with but all the new Maglites I've seen come with a standard shape bulb. Yet they sell Mag-Num Star Xenon ones right next to them! What's up with that!? I just put the Mag-Num Stars in my 2D and my dad's 4D, big improvement! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry, on my last posting, I mean XPR113 (xenon) is discontinued at Radio Shack. They do carry KPR113 (krypton) but KPR113 is not as bright as XPR113.

By the way, I picked up some Mag Krypton 3 Cell and use it on my PT Tec40 using 4 AA Alkaline. So far, it seem to be very bright and very reliable.

On a related topic, can anyone suggest a bright bulb for a 3D Mag?
