Well I started out looking for a backup small light for huntin.
Read far too many posts on this site and then thought I needed a brand new light to serve the purpose I've been using a minimag for over the last many years.
Spent ALOT of hours contemplating and well finally decided that this year I'll use the money for another need. (next yr I'm gettin the SL 3AA Lux)
So I'm at Gander Mountain lookin at the lights and there staring me in the face is the little Browning 10mm. Tomorrow I'm gonna go pick one up as they only want $9.99 for it.
It should serve the purpose well of a backup light.

I am not sure, but I THINK it is about the same thing as a Pelican 2AAA light. If so, I find it to be underwhelming at best.

What is it that you want a backup for? I'm sure we can help!

Yep - it's a Pelican - only difference is the nameplate - nice little light, I like mine, though I find it a bit too tightly focused for what I usually want a little light for. It's really nice for looking at a part, or anything else, right up close. Not so great for digging around in a big backpack in the dark, looking for something small.

All in all, an ArcAAA is a better all-around light, if not quite so cheap.

That was/is my biggest gripe with the 2AAA Pelican. TOO tight of beam (might as well have a minim*g on you). Also poor battery life, and since AAA no lithiums!

The Pelican <hold that thought - gotta go grab it> MityLite 2AA (model 2300 printed on body) is a FAR better solution!

At 6 feet from a white wall, there is a soft edged spot of light approx. 14 inches across. At 1 foot, just a smidgen over 3 inches. It is UTTERLY smooth, with no artifacts whatsoever (due to a textured light module). I understand there may be a version of this light with the excellent clickie that the rechargable M7 has! Although it one hands (at least mine) just fine. It isn't SUPER bright by any means, but the beam quality is superb!

However I concur with anyone who says an ARC AAA or a CMG Infinity Ultra (1aaa and 1aa respectively) LED lights. OR one of the new Dorcy 1AAA LED lights (just under 6 bucks at Walmart) although it isn't water PROOF like the ARC or Infinity. All three are fine close up task or walk around in the dark lights!

Yeah - the Pelican 2AAA is an odd duck - I mostly really like the Peli's, but that one isn't particularly well-conceived, nor is its little brother, the 1AAA mini-mighty, or whatever it's called.

I'm still torn on the Pelican L1 LED - nice light, but the weird batteries make it a tough light to own.

All in all - the bigger Peli's are a better bet. From 2AA on up, they're great!

Worth noting that the clickie tail version of the 2AA is NOT scuba rated as the standard version is.

OK I haven't picked one up yet. I started with the notion that a SL 2L TT would serve the purpose and was gonna replace my minimag.

Then I became concerned about the throw and started lookin at the SL 3AAA Luxeon as I became intrigued by that little LED.

Then I thought that hey if a minimag has been sufficient over the last 15+ yrs that all I might need is a compact backup in case the minimag dies on the trail as happened last yr. (first time, bulb burned out)

So as you see the more I learn and hang out here the more confused I become.

LED, incandescent, xenon, halogen, lithium, luxeon, etc, etc man I need direction........

What YOU need is a Luxeon Pill (Sandwich) to put in that mini m*g!!! It will outperform the incandescent every which way!

Although if really bright throw isn't needed the Opalec 3 LED replacement is also VERY nice!

If a 2AA incandescent will do, get the Pelican!

If you gotta have a compact 2AAA light, if LED UK 2AAA. If incandescent Princeton TEC Blast. Neither one will cost over 15 bucks. My Dad saw the 2AAA UK I got. He had used a 1AAA Pelican as a Wade Fishing light. As SOON as he saw the UK turned on, he appropriated it! He has raved about it at least twice since!

My speciallty is cheap good lights! Just ask!

Swift,
I wouldn't rule out the Streamlight Twin Task 2L quite yet. It's got a lot going for it. I got one, nice light...gives me two lights in one. The LED's for close-up, read maps, light the living room, 28 hours (advertised) run time. Plus the xenon bulb for brighter light with more throw at 2.5 hours (advertised) run time. I also think that if the xenon bulb goes out you still have the LED's for light. Coupled with the lithium 123 batteries it will work if left in the truck during the winter time when it's really cold outside.

It's WAAAAAY better than your minimag.

BTW, that Xenoy plastic in the pelican lights is NOT unbreakable!!!

I have one of the old 2xAAA models to prove it. I think the reason it broke is that the H2 gas built up inside of the light and then exploded! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I didn't hear it explode (I probably wasn't at home), but I did find the remnants of it inside of my nightstand, along with a corroded battery. Until a recent thread about H2 gas buildup inside of sealed lights (HELP, My PrincetonTec Surge just exploded; I'm hit), I was completely confused as to what had happened to this little light. Now I think I know.

Moral of the story: If you buy a well-sealed light, make sure to carefully vent it periodically and don't let the batteries go bad inside of it!

Swift, I agree with yam. Get the SL TT 2L. You won't regret it. I just got one (my first nice flashlight) to replace my minimag for camping and hunting. I love it. It blows the minimag away on Xenon mode, plus you have the LED's for jobs that don't require quite that much light. For $29.95, they are a bargain! Oh, and remember, it even comes with your first two lithium 123's.
