I maybe asking for the mythical golden goose or unicorn here...

Any decent budget aspherics out there that will throw a decent spot out to 300 yds or so??

I've tried searching for different keywords here and have had little luck... I am a Newb.

By "Budget" my thoughts are $50-70 range... Maybe a little higher for superior quality.

I am not opposed to building a light... but have 0 experience and very little in the way of tools to do any serious modding.

300 yards is pushing anything and aspherics do not work for as long a distance than a good reflectored flashlight due to divergence. But in reality you're not going to find a readily available led thrower good to 300 yards especially for only 50-70 bucks. Your best bet is to find a high powered HID spotlight, they throw a near perfect beam for a long distance.

What are you planning on using this for? In my experience, it's nearly impossible to be able to make something out 200 yards away, even if the flashlight lights it up. It's just too far away. If you were good at modding, this would be easily possible. If you can do basic soldering, you might want to look into a Kai RQ, with a Cree R2 and 1.4 amp driver.

But otherwise, I agree an HID is probably the best you'll get already put together. You can find a decent one on Ebay for 50-$100.

Okay thanks, maybe I'll look the HID route...

300 yds was just an arbitrary number I picked out... I'd probably be satisfied with 150-200yds. I've looked at some other beam shots posted of aspherics and like the "laser" like appearance with the super thin beam of light up close that still maintains a good small spot further out.

I've been thinking about getting one (or more) of the Romiscen lights since several of them are Aspheric and you can get them in several battery configurations.

************************ Edit'
I did find one thread that said to buy the following items from DX
UltraFire WF-501 sku 16240
Aspheric Lens sku 5297
SMO Reflector sku 5955
For a total of about $20
For only $20 I think I'll give this a try... but the lens shows on Backordered :( :( :(

The smooth lens in the 501 actually makes it throw less and the turns the beam into a ringy mess, it also makes it less bright! i know as i put 2 into friends lights and the dimpled reflector is far superior in everyway, which should not be the case in throw.

I have had a few aspherics, and to be honest the Romisen version is the best budget quality but its scew adjust flood to spot is a bind. For a true thrower on a shoe string try the C78 and a 14500 battery, truely a pocket marvel. the light baterys and charger should be yours for $25

qwertyydude sorry dude but not true the aspherics will throw alot further than reflectors and the cool thing is you can shine them at targets around house without upsetting people since there is no spill.

you can do searches here and build a 50mm lense that will go over 300 yards. i know becaues i did.

I've done a bit of searching info out here in CPF and had some difficulty... there is just SO much data and finding the right keywords to get the results you want is rough.

Is the 50mm build you're talking about a "Budget" concious build a newb could do or is it more of a serious modders build?

if you dont want to solder or do more experimenting on leds,,,go to kaidoman or dx buy a cheaper 55mm diameter head flashlight light with a q-5 or r-2 single led. also get about a 50 mm aspheric lens from either. when you get it unscrew lens, remove reflector glue in lens at oppisite end of led, screw head in or out to achieve focus, enjoy. but i warn you this will probally lead you to spending more money than you think over some time when the light bug bites you. you might have to get a little more creative, but this is the easyest way as the led is mounted on heat sink and light is allready wired and built. your just messing with the head. you can do smaller lens but the bigger the lens reduces the size of hotspot and magnifies brightness.

the flat part of the lens goes tward led.

when you do a search use the google search above, you will get more results. try searching aspheric 50 mm home made. or seperatly. enjoy.

Do you have a specific purpose in mind, or are you just asking a curiousity question?

If you have something specific, folks here can probably help a lot more.

Is there ever a real "purpose" for a high power aspheric to throw 200+ yards when you cant realistically make out details that far away without binoculars or a scope?

I just want something with big throw to impress friends/family... Pull out a light and shot a beam off into the distance type thing ;)

I think I'm going to try out the Ultrafire 501 + Aspheric since its only like $25 shipped from DX its a fairly insignificant cost to play with.
I just wish the lens didnt show back ordered... wonder how long thats gonna take to get in.

Why a 55mm head, what would you do with the extra 5mm? Just wondering, I can understand an extra 1-2mm for the glue, but more space seems like it would be too much.
