is there a brighter and/or cheaper bulb for this than Mag's own Xenon 6-cell bulb? I'm looking for either same performance from a cheaper bulb or better performance for under $5 a piece (performance includes durability)? Not looking for anything that'll melt the reflector, either, trying to do the whole deal at about $25. I see the radioshack KPR112/118 mentioned frequently- would output compare with the Mag Xenon, and how well does the bulb hold up?

Any bulb rated for 7.2 - 8.4 volts and .7 - 1.0 amps that is krypton should do nicely.
A mag6cell hk ought to fit your req's and price at about a buck a piece. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
This is the bulb 6D/C magg lights come standard with
It's a 5 watt krypton bulb by the way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Welcome to CPF -

I've been running the following bulb on 4x123 in a Mag 3C. This can also be run in a 2D on 4x123 as well.

The bulb is the Carley 820 - 10.0v, 0.60a, MSCP 17
I get over 2 hours of runtime on a set of batteries.

At 6 watts, you don't need to replace the plastic lens/reflector. Put some Scotch magic tape across the lens, and it smears away those M@g "uglies"
It puts out about 140 - 150 torch lumens.

It's brighter and whiter, but not cheaper. Bulb is 7.89++ I know it's a bit more than your price target, but having gotten into the super bulbs, It's certainly whiter than any Mag bulb puts out and I feel it's worth the investment.

Hope this helps.
