I found 5 sub c cells will fit in a 3d mag with no tailspring. Right now I am running a 4 cell Krypton. I know I could use the ROP bulbs, but are there any other options?

you really need 6 cells for rop. and metal reflector with glass lens.

there aren't any more bulbs that you can use with 5 cells,
there is a halogen pr bulb sold at radio shack, made for 4 cells, with your 5 1,2v cells it should be brighter than 4 cell bulb, it cost around $4.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062391, be aware the image is not of that bulb, that bulb has a capsule cylindrical shape, like rop high, but a bit bigger, not a elongated sphere like krypton bulbs.
not much else you can use with 6v and plastic optics.

except for leds, tle 300 will work nicely with 6v, will give you about 600lm.
if you can use tools, you can stick virtually any led there

I like playing around with the PR-base hotwires, and I've used the (ROP) 3854-L with five cells, and it's only OK, not sure if it's worth it IMO.

I think that staying with 4 cells and the Pelican 3753-H (extensively covered in my thread here with 4x NiMH C's as well as 4x Alkaline C's & D's) may be your best budget option - this should be approximately ~double the output of your current bulb. However, the 3854/3853 ROP's really do crush this modest configuration that I did. Unfortunately, your 3D host is kind of in a difficult range length-wise, too long for the 6xAA NiMH ROP's & the 26500/26650 2xLiIon ROP's, and too short for the 6xC ROP's.

The 5-cell region is pretty thin for good bulbs, it seems to me. :candle:

Edit, copied from my thread:

Stock Mag 4D (Krypton) bulb_______ Pelican 3753-H (with the same cells)

The neat part is that you can still use the stock reflector & lens, and it even runs on the very extreme end of what the lowly alkaline cell chemistry can provide.

The Magnum Star 4 cell xenon will be brighter than the krypton bulb. You could also try the Radio Shack HPR50 Halogen, it's a 4 cell Halogen that will be about 10% brighter than the Magnum Star xenon.
Both the Magnum Star xenon and HPR50 instaflash around 7.2 volts so be careful with 5 sub C's if they are hot off the charger.

yep.
i use magnum star 5 cells with dolphin lantern and 6x sub c nicd. i burned radio shack halogen when tried with the same battery.

.
there is another solution,
next light on my to do list is 3854h in my 4c mag powered by 6x 4\5 sub c cells, it should fit.

A potted WA1160 would work. Overdriven with 5 NiMh's it would be nice.

Add an extension tube and 6th cell to open more options.

ROP is roaring with 6 cells.

Philips 5761 is another bi-pin option. Again, you may need to update the reflector and lens.

I might try the HPR 50. I found 5 fresh alkaline Cs were too much for it in the past but maybe this will work. I already have a 4d ROP and was looking for less output and more runtime here.

Bullzeyebill nailed it. By far, my favorite 6Volt bulb is the WA1160. I have powered it with 5 x SC's, 5 x 1/2D's (MagCharger style battery stick) and 5 x 2/3A's.

Since the host is 3D, why not using 3 IMR 26650 (M*g09) which will open some doors for brighter world.
How about 4x26500 (M*g623)? Or 3 protected 18650 (M*g85)?

Or, since FiveMega is posting in this thread, may I mention his 9AA battery carrier, our doorway into the wonderful Mag85 world.
