WA makes some reasonably compact ballasts. Up to 50W. I looked at these a while back.

IRT the above statement, perhaps a buck/boost converter? Could possible be made to charge an internal pack, as well...

Yes I wouldn't want to take it for a long walk but the specs on the Osram 54100 36V 400W 16000L are tempting for a Halogen handheld, trade off excess weight short run time 3400k color temp but the up side is the bulb is less than $8.00.

Short Arc Xenon is intoxicating but the prices are prohibitive from what I have seen unless a group buy could bring in range? HID with a 35 or 50W ballast looks to be middle ground price/weight/run time in a portable package and old school Halogen being the simplest to cobble together. To pull something truly spectacular together I lean toward Short Arc and HID but I may end up just being a cheerleader on the sidelines.

You just can't beat incan for bargain brightness. I guess that's why I'm a Hot Wire Guy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I agree that short arc is pricey. There might be ways around that though. Maybe a compact HMI or other metal halide. I like the 54100 as well. Does the 36V come in a G9.5 base?

The 54100 is a G6.35 socket, overall bulb length is 2.362, light center length is 1.417. I'm not real sure how it would perform in something like the Carley 3" reflector that is readily available to us but it would be worth trying out if I had a way to power it. It should work well in the 7’ NELCO reflector as it is very close to the size of the H1 automotive bulb that came in it but the H1 has an axial filament. There is a NELCO office in the eastern part of the state I may try and contact them to check on the availability of just reflectors if somebody can come up with something to house them in.
If not it looks like the path to HID is getting easier.

Notice that for slightly less than twice the power, the 450 watt short arc Osram puts out a lot more lumens than the 250 watt. The 450 watt achieves a efficiency of ~29 lumens/watt. The 250 watt acchives ~18 lumens/watt. I won't take the 250 watt if I were you, I'll rather take a normal high power incan.

If you're going to get C size cells, 450 watts shouldn't be a big problem. 14 RC style C cells @ 4000mah, should last around 10 mins @ 25A of current. Have 28 of em as a belt around your waist. People will be asking you where did your power come from. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif After all it's just a wire running to your waist. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It's a 20 min run time HOLA! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just when I thought HIDs would be good enough, you have to mention short arc xenon. Certainly that would have a nice "light sabre" throw to it. Time for more googling.

As far as a home for a 7" reflector, you might look at the Husky 2.25 ... It comes with a metal one, and an axial filament H3 bulb. All for $25 at Home Depot. Maybe that's why I bought three of them... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

I've been looking for an excuse to use a cartridge belt as sort of a battery bandolero. It would look so cool! Can you imagine two bandoleros across the chest like those Mexican banditos? Each one packing enough high current nimh cells enough to power even the 36V Osram? A pistol grip reflector head connected to the packs with an industrial twist lock water tight connector. I think that would look bitching. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Now the only question is...what are the equivalencies?
12-gauge = ???, sub C?
410-gauge = fat-A?
30-06 = AA?
In a really bad fake Mexican accent, HID? We don't need no steenkin HIDs!

If you can find more economical XSA bulbs than the premium Osram XBO series, It might be worth a try.

And I cannot imagine how we can link em together in a reliable way without the wires catchign on to anything. I'll still prefer the belt option because of that. Nothing much to catch on, you still can carry your back pack or whatever you want to sling on your back. Main issue here is catching of things on the bandoleros, but what do I know about them. Can they be secured tightly to the chest? They will look like an X across your chest right? Or tell me if I'm getting the whole picture wrong (as I always do /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

Hell, we can even have some sort of holster on the belt so that it can become a 1 piece EDC kit. (Though having a light with a 7" reflector dangling from your waist is sure going to raise some eyebrows and questions on your intentions and sanity. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

They'll criss-cross your chest. I can envision a way to get them in the shell holders in an up-down-up...configuration. Ring-tongue terminals resistance welded to the contact nipples then heavy gauge but flexible silicone-insulated wire crimped and shrink-tubed. The actual battery nipple areas could then be coated with a high toughness acrylic conformal coating for decent abrasion resistance. As to the cells heating up...if it isn't getting hot, you're not pushing the light hard enough /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cabelas sell a few different types of ammo belts and one type of sling bandolier. The belts hold 25 shotgun shells or 20 rifle cartridges. The bandolier holds 50 of either.

I'm not letting practicality rein in my musing at this point. This is the time for imagination to go crazy. We can deal with reality later.

OK after a long day of looking around at Super Lights the MagaRay, MaxaBeam and KumKang are the stand out performers as we already know. They are using Xenon Short Arc and HID with HID being the miser lending to longer run time. Sorry Halogen you’re just too easy.

So options for a seriously bright performer lie between XSA and HID, from what I have found HID is limited to 50W in a portable unit for a DC powered ballast and XSA can go beyond 250W from DC power depending on how many bandoliers you are willing to strap on. Thoughts please as I’m too tired to post specs right now.

That last one is nice. Only 19 lbs, well, worn over the shoulders isn't too bad. An aircraft landing light could then easily be hooked up. Nice for walking the dog.

Yes Xenon Short Arc is full spectrum but I read somewhere today units that block UV are available, I will get back to ya on this one if I can find it again.

Landing lights finally came in, the 100 watt 13v GE Q4509 are about the same as a 100w vector 138, similar nice spot, not too different, eh, what did I expect. Some other thread claimed they worked much better than the H3 spots, but actually they are about the same. Look kinda small, may work better as a flashlight head.

Now the GE 4557, good grief, has both high and low beams, low is 400 watts and high is a tight axial coil and 1000 watts. Expecting a little more from this light. Garage is too darn cold for a test fire.

Nice find on the urban gear bondolier! I think two could be sewn together to make a secure criss-cross chest holder.

I think we'll be able to pin down the spcific technology for this project once we decide on some performance parameters.

Short arc is definitely a most intense technology. We'll have to decide here if it is something we want to tackle. In any case, hazards must be understood and accounted for. Can't wait to hear how the GE4557 tests out. What is the base on that bulb?

Base of bulb has what I call "two little screwy thingys" "TLST" base, but then, I freely admit I'm an idiot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I have a mounting plate on order from "warbirdrelics" since the PAR 64 theater cannisters were just too expensive and very heavy. Now I just have to figure out the right level of overdrive.
