I was browsing a consignment shop today and they have a real old Coleman dual-fuel for 10 bucks. I'd get it in a heartbeat, but after signing a contract on a new house today I promised my wife I'd check with the pros to see if I could get it running versus just having a shelf ornament. Though I'd love it ;)

The globe looks great. It looks like it uses #21's. There is little rust on the outside. I opened the fuel cover and the inside ring was rusty. I couldn't see inside the fuel tank, but if it were rusty is there a possibility to clean the fuel tank and get that bad boy working?

thanks

Yep, you can probably get it running. If it's labeled as dual fuel then it's not that old at all; Coleman is great for parts availability.

When you get it home, make sure you empty out any fuel, pump it up to pressure, and dunk the whole thing under water to look for leaks. Open the main valve and make sure bubbles only come out of where they're supposed to. The fuel tank can be cleaned with gasoline and bb's, a small length of chain, or anything that'll rattle around inside and remove stuck-on crud. Just shake the beejeezus out of it, dump, refill, and repeat until no more junk comes out.

I've bought lots of lanterns at pawn shops and garage sales for $5, put $20 worth of parts into them and had them hissing merrily away. Fun little gadgets.

Edit: I don't claim expertise, but I do have lots of first hand experience running these critters and restoring them to usability from various levels of dis-service.
