can I build this for less?

Hi Guys.

I stumbled across this forum while googling mods for my mag mini great site by the way. I was interested to see if I could build a good bike light for less. good ones seem so bloody expensive:confused:

I'm looking at some thing capable of keeping up with an exposure enduro maxx 2 the spec is

Specification...

• Seoul LED Technology
• 720 Lumen Output (MaXx)
• 3 hour burn time on MaXx, 10 on Ride and 24 on Low
• Lithium Ion Battery Technology
• 252 grams with Q.R Bracket
• Front Diameter - 46mm / Rear Diameter - 43mm / Overall Length - 106mm

and it cost £275

So back to the original question is it possible to build some thing like this for less? I'm not worried about bike mounts I can DIY that with some old inner tube and cable ties..

Buy a P7 and a driver board from Kaidomain that accepts 5.5-15.5v input and has 3 brightness modes. Then get a 50mm reflector from DX and a battery from batteryspace. I'm guessing that those parts will run you about $90. The ones listed above are really a deal that you can't beat.

building a light only makes sense, when one wants something very special that is not offered,
and even then, there is NO CHANCE to be cheaper.

PS: if You are not satisfied, or if something dies, You can still use the housing of that light + all the charging electronics and simply change led used, or the driver, or ...
by doing so, You can improve electronics/output considerably, while still having a good, nice looking housing.


If You want something of comparable quality to the light You linked, get a Lupine Tesla light head and build Yourself a battery pack.

With an integrated battery probably not, if you don't mind a separate battery, definately yes. Either by DIY kit (ktronik, trout, nightlightning) or mag mod. You'd be here till christmas reading up on all the different mag mods, but the head from a d-cell with a DerWichtel triple P7 heatsink and either one of his or georges (taskled) will probably set you back about the same, and have (at a guesstimate) 3-4x the output.

I assume that the beam shots with the hot pink flashlight mount :cool: are of the Maglite with the above Britelumens mods?

Any issues or complaints in use from pedestrians or motorists?

I'm not a comunter so I dont ride on roads so much but i'm sure its bright enough to anoy them

For about £150 you can have:

3 ssc p7
1 Der Witchel kit (heatsink & reflectors)
1 hipflex from taskled
1 d maglite
1 exposure handle bars holder

12 18650 sanyo batteries from a vaio laptop
1 pcb to buildt up a 14.8volts 6600mah

Result: 2700 lumens, 2:30-3 hours in max, days in level2 (about 500 lumens)
