Can I charge a Lithium-Ion cell with a charger meant for Lithium-Polymer?

As per the title, I'd like to charge a lithium-ion cell with a charger meant for lithium polymer cells. Is this possible/safe?

Specifically, I'd like to replace the 610mAh LiPo battery in a PS3 controller with an 18650 cell (or several in parallel).
