Just a quick question for the experts out there, I have a couple of the AA Pure Energy rechargeable alkaline batteries,

can I charge these safely in my C9000? I read somewhere on CPF that the Pure Energy factory charger charges at 375mA, which of course the C9000 can do. Is this correct? Let me know guys, I have some low drain devices that could use these batteries if I can charge them correctly.

Although the C9000 might be able to provide the right current, it will refuse to charge alkaline batteries. As soon as you try to start the charging process the cell will be rejected by the charger.

Is that just because these cells have more resistance than NiCD or NIMH? If that is the case, oh well, I guess I'm just out of luck, as I only have two of these and it isn't worth buying the charger just for two.

If you have one of the old rayovac charges meant for those renewal batteries it would charge them.

I accidenlty put rechargeable alkalines in a NiCad/NMH charger and a couple hours laters they went :poof:. Heard a couple of pops about 30 seconds apart for the 2 batteries I had in it. Leaked a little in the charger, but was able to get almost all of it out. If I remember right, alkalines charge by constant voltage, where NiCad and NMH charge by constant current or something like that. You would need a different charger for alkalines for best results. Sounds like the C9000 can tell the difference and refuse to charge the alkalines, but my charger was pretty dumb and went ahead anyway. Rayovac was the only company that had rechargeable alkalines in B&M stores. I think Home Depot and Amazon have a Rayovac charger that will do all the above Amazon.com: Rayovac PS 3 - Battery charger: Electronics. The NiCad/NMH charge times are rather long and you would get only 1 charge rate. Read the reviews on Amazon.

I did that too about 10 years ago with a dumb charger, they leaked over my hands when I took them out as I hadn't noticed there was anything wrong with them. They just felt "slippery" so I immedietely set them down on a piece of wood and went to wash my hands.
I can't remember how long the batteries were sitting there but they ate right through the paint on the wood.

Hopefully the c9000 will not let this happen.
