Can I recharge tab batteries with my Maha charger?

So I have this great charger which I paid $80 (C808M) and the battery pack from my drill is acting up. I figure maybe the charge can help to bring some life back if I recharge each cell on my Maha charger.

Good idea or am I going to get hurt?

Hello ZimmerDN,

If you separate each cell and charge it individually, you should have no problems, but you will have to watch to make sure you are making proper contact. The 808 can not charge a battery pack.

I plan on taking it apart to charge each cell individually but I was not sure if the size on those cells would fit in my Maha charger (since it's a tab battery).

It's even worth my effort to disassemble and reassemble? I know I can cycle those batteries through conditioning mode a couple of times on the charger but I don't have any experience on how much good it does on deteriorated cells.

Your real problem is going to be trying to put the pack back together.

Even though you may be able to separate the battery pack down to individual cells.....you can not just 'solder' the tabs back on to the ends of the batteries. It generates way too much heat and destroys the battery. Even just trying to solder two of the tabs together can be a problem, since they are very resistent to being soldered.

The tabs/metal interconnecting strips are typically spot welded onto the batteries.

I always thought tab batteries are meant for soldering. Are you saying it can only be soldered once? Repeatedly soldering tab batteries will destroy them regardless of how careful you are?

You can solder to the tabs, but not to the actual batteries. (Some people do solder to batteries directly, but it is not recommended.)

You can charge the cells individually while still in the pack.. When necessary, I have a set of alligator clips for my Maha C777 that I clip on to each individual battery and charge the whole pack one cell at a time..

That's interesting. So even thought all the batteries are strung together but the soldering on each tab you can you recharge your battery pack one cell at a time without physically breaking that solder connection first?

How's that possible?

can someone please reply to question above?

With no offense intended, I suggest you do not mess around with the battery pack. It is obvious that you do not have a good understanding on how a battery pack works, and could possibly hurt yourself or someone else.

Now to answer your question anyway: yes, you can if they are connected in series in the pack. With aligator clips you can charge/discharge one cell at a time.

Well than that's easy enough. I just have to check to see if they are in series or not. thx
