Can the BC-1HU overcharge a battery?

I've just recently bought a BC-1HU "Speedy Box" battery charger (branded 7dayshop.com).

I've got Ni-MH batteries that I'd not used for at least a couple of years. A few days ago charged then in a cheap charger.

Putting the batteries into the BC-1HU, it detected one battery was faulty. Fine.

I selected discharge, then the remaining 3 batteries started charging, LED went green for 2 of them after a while.

But, one battery seems to be still charging after several hours and it's quite hot. Can the BC-1HU overcharge?

P.S. I discharged the battery again earlier on, and just now LED gone green on the second charge. Ha!

I was worried for a moment that LED was going to stay red indefinitely.

But, anyway despite recent welcome developments, I suppose the charger is unable to overcharge? Thanks.

Hello Richard,

Welcome to CPF.

Yes, the Speedy Box can overcharge batteries.

Any charger that uses -dV for its charge termination signal can over charge batteries if it charges at a charge rate that takes longer than 2 hours to complete the charge. At lower charge rates the end of charge signal is not as pronounced, and this can result in over charging.

If your cells are healthy and you notice that they are starting to warm up, it is best to manually terminate the charge and hope for better results during the next charge.
