Cell lost LSD capabilities "on the shelf"

I picked up some more LSD cells today and discharged them in my Maha C9000 @ 500 mA to see how much remaining capacity they had.

3 of the cells have over 1400 mAh capacity, one of the cells came back with "DONE" right away.
I had tested all of the cells with a DMM before discharging and the "DONE" cell was around 0.95v under load whereas the others were around 1.24 under load.

I never thought to discharge that one at a lower rate until after I started charging it to see if it was "HIGH" :ohgeez:

Looks like that one cell is a dud from a LSD perspective, so that pack is going back tomorrow for exchange.

Sometimes batteries lose their LSD capabiities before they even make it to the consumer....

Don't believe it lost it's LSD capabilities just from sitting on the shelf.

Most likely it's a glitch in their quality control. Either letting a bad cell pass or they've forgot to charge it.

Was it a used one with quite some cycles on it I would have guessed for an internal "almost" short - have had a few cells gone that way in the past - even an NiMH and one so severe that the wrapping crimped 50% (= it got really hot).

Saying an "LSD" cell lost its capabilities on the shelf is about the same as saying an "NiMH" cell was found defective on purchase. You really can't lump all cells together and pretend they are the same regardless of who made them, where, or when.

Now if it is an Eneloop this happened to we would sit up and take notice. If it is another type of cell, not so much. But even a dud Eneloop probably makes it through the supply chain from time to time.

I got a pack of LSD cells and three were at 1.3v and the one was stone dead.
Less than 1v.

I charged it and its been behaving ever since.
I use it at home on a single cell application that I charge regularly, its marked properly so I don't mix it up with the others, I don't trust it even though there is no noticable self discharge.

I didn't want to name the manufacturer or size of cell initially, as I wanted to get some generic LSD related feedback without any bias towards any particular company.

It was a Rayovac Hybrid C cell.

Based on my experience with the Hybrid C & D cells, this particular cells should have had a lot more remaining charge out of the package.

Thanks. Not sure how many of those were quality posts though :D

True. As I mentioned above, I was looking for some generic feedback to verify if what I was saying was accurate.

The cell is probably fine for a regular use C cell, but since the cell was effectively empty when purchased new, and the other cell in the pack was 50% full, I can't say for sure if it will still hold a charge 6 months down the road.

the few dud cells i have seen were dead as in 0.00v out of the package.
could this low cell have missed getting its initial factory charge?
would be interesting to charge it and set it aside.

I suppose it's possible, but highly unlikely.

I did charge it at 1500 mA for roughly half an hour last night and then discharged it.

I put about 550 mAh into it and when I discharged it, that's about what came out.

If it wasn't for the fact that I need this pair of C cells to hold their charge for 6+ months, I would have kept it just to see for sure if it actually did lose it's LSD capability.

I exchanged that pair of cells for a new pack.
The cells in the new pack both register 1.27v under load and are currently discharging.
