It appears to be a simple, cheap, and easy project that anyone could build. I wonder how efficient chainsaw engines are (I have no idea)? Are there any reliable ratings that allow you to compare small motors & engines to select the most efficient ones? This may include chainsaws and even gas powered R/C engines.

I wonder how your going to go about keeping the output constant...as two cycles are built to vary its throttle rather than keeping it in one place the way 4-cycles idle
