I have the basic 4 port charger that came with my Eneloop kit that I bought. You have to charge two batts at a time, either AA or AAA. My question is will this charger work just as good on other brand batteries or is it some how made to work best with eneloops?

It will work just as good but it isn't a very good charger. You need to find an independent channel smart charger if you want to get good life out of your batteries.

I just bought one like this and it's great so far! I'm still learning it but it charges all chemistries, and balances multiple pack cells as well.

These types of hobby chargers are adaptable to flashlight batteries but you have to find some holders and do a little wiring but it's worth it!

The Sanyo MQN06 will work with other brand cells too, but maybe not "as good". Sanyo has done a great job matching their cells to their chargers (i.e. getting proper termination at low Charge Rates). Read about their latest design in this thread started by member PeAK for more details: Some details on Sanyo's "Peak-cut control" termination scheme

Agree. Charging in SERIES isn't the best. I've assembled a thread of popular 'Smart' Independent Channel Chargers:
TTA's NiMH/NiCD Battery Charger Specifications Thread

You can also CLICK on my Sig Line LINK where you'll find LINKs to many other Rechargeable Battery Topics, such as: An informal look at the Sanyo NC-MQN06U – charging in pairs for example.

Finally, there have been MANY threads asking for charger recommendations over the past couple of weeks. Just SEARCH or visually scan the Index Pages for them. You see the same recommendations come up over-and-over.

This type of charger might be too great a leap from a Sanyo MQN06 for the OP.

Thanks for the responses!

Also thanks for the additional links "Take the active".

And yes that price jump is not an option for me.

I usually charge equally discharged batts together. My edc is a 1AA light. So there might be a week on average until I put the two in. I don't think waiting a week with a eneloop will be make much difference between the cells.
