This might be a real noob question, but here goes:

I just picked up a Coast 7438, which is their focusing LED light (apparently this flashlight is sometimes known as the Hokus Fokus). It runs on three AAA cells. I've got a handy set of four Uniross 700mAhr AAA NiMH and a Uniross charger that wants cells in PAIRS, either two or four.

Right now I am using three cells in the Coast and discharging the fourth on my West Mountain CBT so I can recharge all four simultaneously. Clearly this will wear on my patience very very soon.

Is there a CPF-favored smart charger for NiMH AAA that will recharge three cells?

What about the "La Crosse BC-900". It can also test capacities!

I use two of these.

Will charge one / two AAA nimh's at a time.

So I can charge all 3 AAA's at once.

Sony charger, BCG-34HC

They will also charge one to four AA's at a time.

Hello Steve,

My travel charger is a TG2800 from AmondoTech. It is compact and charges each slot independently.

Get another flashlight and charge them in 4x and 2x sets. Or get a bunch of the flashlights and keep charging AAA batts.

Besides the Eneloop charger, Amondotech.com sells a lot of chargers with independent channels and labels them as such. Also all the 15 minute chargers have independent channels.

Note that the typical 3aaa LED light has no voltage boost and will be somewhat dimmer with rechargeables than with fresh alkalines.

Thanks for all the responses, folks. A quick look at a couple of the CPF-favored vendor sites has shown me the "independent channel" units are readily available and modest in price. Apparently what I needed most was a bit of a tune-up on the lingo. Much appreciated!

There are plenty of individual channel chargers. I have an old rayovac which will charge single NiMH or NiCad, the MAHA charger I just bought will. The old NiMH charger that came with my Camera would too. Its just the cheap chargers you find in places like walmart that won't.
that reminds me I need to list my rayovac in the sell classified section.
