Just looking for a sub $20 (inc shipping) headlamp, mainly to be used for hunting and camping.
What you recommend?
Has anyone tried the sku.20763 headlamp from DX?

Thanks

Re: Cheap headlamp DX

Had my eye on it as it's really a badly missing format for headlamps. That is it's got a Cree and 3 levels with no strobe (a headlamp is one time I don't want strobe). Seems like at the price point you can't lose.

I dont own one but Black Diamond seems like a pretty good light and you will be getting it from lighthound. After your cpf discount it should be real close to $20. Good luck

Head lamps I dont feel have to be all that great, just good amount of light within 3 feet of what you are working on.

I paid 5$ for mine and use it a lot. Try homedepot for a nice one for cheap.

Some of Kathmandu's headlamps are fairly good, especially when on sale/clearance. Check out the 1W headlamp - 3AA, 3 regulated levels, good runtimes

Been looking for a headtorch in Aus for ages. A couple of local shops (mountain design and aussie disposals) stock stuff like black diamond and pt. All are overpriced though. The duracell 6 led isn't that bad and when kmart has a sale is good value.

Oh yeah considered the fenix headband?

thanks for the responses, ill keep those options in mind

the fenix headband is quite interesting now that uv brought it to my attention. I like the idea and it looks very well built, just not sure how handy it is

i have the DX headlamp (sku 20763) . for close range it is to bright!!

spot is really narrow, it has almost no flood, only throw.

don't know how long the batteries last (AAA).

it's defenitly not waterproof. if you shake it, ican hear the lens move..:naughty:

You can get a princeton tec fuel at ****s sporting goods for $21-23. Its very compact and has a very long runtime.

This may be an old thread. So there are many brighter options out now for $20. Like this headlamp I reviewed on YouTube. Its about $20 on eBay.
For the price you cant beat this headlamp. Is is bright as hell. So bright you can feel the heat in the beam even though its LED. This thing will light up an entire buss bright as day from 400 feet away. Search ebay for "T6 LED Zoomable focus Headlamp" and look for the one that looks like this headlamp. Be careful you dont get the one that takes 4 AA You want the one that uses two 18650.
Here is my YouTube review.

EDIT. 7 of them you are talking about the headlamp...

Sent from my phone with camera with flash and internet on it... :D

Your are quite the detective. Yes I have this light. I made that video and uploaded it to my youtube channel. I am just very impressed with it thats all. I have many many headlamps to compare it to. This light would be better though if they mounted one cell on each side of the head that way I could rest my head down on the ground when I lay under a car. I admit I'm kind of a flashlight fanatic. Im glad to be here.

Travis, I am a first time poster, but lurking for a little while now. I am in the market for a new headlamp and was wondering what you thought of this 1400lm for running. I'm not looking to spend an arm and a leg on a new headlamp (although that Petzl Nao is looking pretty amazing!) but want the best "value" for my money. I saw your video and it is tempting to look at this one. My biggest question would be what is the battery life for something like this light? I am a big night runner (up to and including the entire night, so 8 hours or so). I don't have a problem changing the batteries, but I don't want to do it 4 times over a night!

If not this light, what are others you would recommend? I'm really wondering if I should just go to an REI and try different lights to see what I like best! Thanks!

I have not tried the headlamp that OP refers to but i have several other low budget headlamps from DX and might give each of them a short review:

First off is the cheapest; SKU: 12924 : This is a good lightweight lamp for under 6 usd. It has 3 settings: high, low and red.
The light pattern gives both good throw and flood and the build quality seems ok. For the money this is a good light. I have several og these and lend the to friends who are going caving with me and dont have a light of their own. In caves the low setting is sufficent unless you are in a big hall.
Downside imho is the AAA batteries; i prefer AA.

Next up is the SKU: 29435; This is a part for part copy/clone/knock-off og the led lenser H7. The only differences i have noticed is; the wires from batterypack to led is flimsier than the original, the headband is of somewhat cheaper quality and the lightpattern is a tad more messy than the original. The light was actually more white than the original wich had a slightly bluer tint. Also a good buy imho if you like the H7. (which i do).
For those that are not familiar with the H7: it is a direct driven light with a potmeter (stepless) dimmer and a good flood to throw function. Uses 3xAAA.

Moving on to the SKU: 32878; like the previous light this is also a 3xAAA with flood to throw. The flood is narrower than on the H7-copy so you get a somewhat narrower field of view. But the light is good and even. It has 3 modes: Hi > Mid > Fast Strobe. They sell these locally at the hardwarestore and they are used by several cavers in the area because of the good light vs price ratio.

And the final light in this review is the SKU: 102061: This is the same light as the previous only with 4 small differences:
1: it uses AA instead of AAA :)
2: it has strap that goes on top of you head in adition to the headband (this can easily be removed if it is not your cup of tea)
3: it has a weak red diode on the batterypack which makes it easier for cavers behind you to see you from.....behind...
4: (and this is the strange part): it is 4.32usd CHEAPER than the AAA version and costs only 8.60. Gonna get more of these.
Btw: there is also a 18650 version of this light for about 13usd for those who prefer that.

Hope someone finds this post somewhat informative and cares to leave a comment ;)

Thanks a lot this was very, very helpful for the uninitiated looking for a headlamp or 3 to start their collection. I bought 3 of the 4th one you recommended and can't wait to use them. I'm not ready to spend $80 on a headlamp I've never needed in 38 years. but 3 of em, 1 for home, car, and back up seem like a great start. Really, thanks for posting this list.
