I may have to turn in my flashaholic card after this post, but here goes. Had to things happen today which gave me pause.

I have been *agonizing* few weeks over which two lights to get my 70-year old mother who lives alone. I wanted an EDC-sized light for her purse and a larger light for her nightstand. I had finally settled an a Malkoff MD2 (with 2-stage ring) which would do double duty when my wife stepped in. She pointed out that mom doesn't need or want 200+ lumens and that she would not be transferring a light from purse to nightstand and back each day. More importantly, she simply would not appreciate a $100 light the way I do. Hmmm. I ended up buying her, of all things, a Streamlight Stylus Pro. Still don't have the nightstand side of the equation figured out, but it will likely be a MagLight.

Then tonight, I was rummaging around in my truck and carport in the dark when I remembered a 3xAA Mag Light my wife bought a while back. She paid $20 for two, including batteries. Like any good CPFer, I crinkled my nose up and had intentions of returning them. Ended up being more trouble than it was worth so I kept them. Tossed one in the tool bucket. This one ended up being the one I used tonight.

I have a variety of lights. The ones I use most are an older SL UltraStinger that I bought before I found CPF and a 2xAA LED (one of those re-branded Terralux lights I think - bought on clearance at Wal Mart for 8 bucks), this one runs on rechargeables. In other words, the lights I use the most and kind of beaters. (Accidentally dropped the 2xAA light in a bucket of bloody deer guts the other night. Fished it out and drove on. Imagine the horror of dropping a $150 light in a bucket of guts!)

The point of all this is that we are reaching a point that even cheap lights offer a lot of utility. Still room for the SF M6's and Malkoff Wildcats, but I appreciate my beaters a little more tonight.

This is one of my favorite cheap household lights. The fluorescent side tube is great for working and reading. Run time is very good as well.

Cheap does not mean poor usability.
