Hi there I am new to the forums and I am looking into making a cheap lightweight portable HID light. The problem is I can only achieve 2 of the 3 goals. Light wieght and portable HID but not cheap. Sorry for the long post.

I ride mountain bikes and I happen to find myself in the dark more often due to this recent daylight savings time change. I have looked into buying some lights specific to my application but they are extremely pricey. I just think that if I went this route I'd get a whole lot more bang for the buck.

In no way am I trying to have people do my research for me. I just noticed that people here have done this before and know what the heck they are doing. Where as I have never done this and I don't want to throw away $300 dollars. I have tried the search bar and I couldn't find quite what I was looking for. This is what I am looking at right now. I have no idea if there is another battery option that is cheaper and maybe just a bit heavier and only 12v instead of the 5-19v range. PLEASE HELP. I was going to keep my light in my back pack until I needed it. Then mount it to the bars and have the battery in my backpack. So I would also appreciate it if you guys could recommend a quick release (just incase I crash) that wouldn't drain to much power or have a bad power transfer rate. I was planning on chosing the battery pack with the different voltages because it would make it possible for me to possibly overpower the light and make it brighter. Correct me if my ideas are wrong. Please forgive my technological terminology ignorance but I hope you understand what I meant in the last sentence and where ever else I might have been unclear.

The light is here with the specs it has a built in ballast and it can probably take a beating because it's meant for offroad.

This is the power source I was looking at because it has different voltage settings and it weight 1 lb.

There's a section of the forum here devoted to bike lights, many of which are homemade and LED. You'd be surprised how much light you can get for few dollars with LEDs. If you look through some of those threads, I'm sure you'll find something you like (including a solution for power) and will feel confident building.

I Kind of wanted to go this route to get more light for the money. I saw those "bicycle lights" last night on the trail (real world application) and they are so weak. :candle: When you start getting into the hard core applications they start at $300 and go to $500 So I figure why not go this route and light up the night. I want to light up the entire mountain when I'm going downhill. It's much safer.

There are 2 systems in this mountain bike magazine the $375 Photon Max and the $336 Photon 8 Enduro+ The Photon Max is housing 3 4w leds for a total of 12w @ 800 lumens 50lux I am just quoting the article please don't linch the noob. I am looking at a 35w for the same price more or less.

I guess what I'm saying is this is what I am planning on doing please just help me fine tune my idea so I will get the best results and efficiency.

Will this be a sufficient power source?

TrailTech do a 10 Watt HID light. You just need to add a power supply and switch. In fact I have one for sale unused from a project.
Or if you want more work try a P7 LED based ligvht head using a cut down Mag light. I have seen people use drink bottles as the battery holder. These then just sit in your drink holder.
Check out my dive light. You could build something similar with out the problems in making it water proof.

And that battery you linked to will run a 10 watt light for an 1-1.5 hours. Best to aim for 3 hours +.

I was reading here last night: http://www.apexbattery.com/co-waampandv.html
So if I were to be running a 35w light @ 12v I would be consuming a little under 3amps (2.9166....)? Which would mean that I need at least a 3000mah battery to run it for an hour?

This should keep my battery power under $100 dollars. Including the charger. 12v 4500 mah

I also found this on ebay it is cheaper but heavier. I was wondering if these types of batteries are more forgiving because I have read on almost every web site that they don't want to you discharge the battery to much or it will mess it up. This warning was for the battery pack listed above "Please don't discharge the battery pack below 10V ( 1.0 V / cell). Deep discharge may damage NiMH battery pack."

Can some1 clarify post #6 for me plz. If this is the formula:
Convert Watt to Amp
You can also convert Wh to Ah by rebalancing the early equation to the one shown below.
amp = watt / volt

Then to find my amp = 35w / 12v that would give me 2.9166.....

any specs on that? Beamshots weight stuff like that

Well, the weight is posted there, at 30oz.

I don't know how many bright flashlights you have seen, but a 20W hid ought to be unlike anything you have seen. To clarify, a high beam on a car is usually 1000 lumens, so at 1200 I doubt it will leave you wanting.

Here is a little info about it, as well as a slightly brighter one. Based in Oregon according to dwminer.

I was unable to find any 20w HID beamshots that actually worked right now, (on CPF) but feel free to do your own search.

I did find this:

Probably a very narrow beam, I don't know if there is a way to diffuse it or not?

Nope, I have nothing to gain from any of this, I was just trying to help a fellow member. It wasn't very long ago I was new also.
YW

I like it alot but that thing is a little more than I wanted to spend. The reason why I was going with the offroad truck light was because if it doesn't work or it isn't quite as practical as I thought I could just slap it on my 4x4

*edit*
and maybe a two fish cycloblocks mount. You can get it at battery junction for $8.

I went on their site but I couldn't find the cycloblocks any chance you could post a link on here?
*NVM I found it
