Hi

My first post here - and probably a real noob question but...

If I want to check some new 18650 cells I received is it as simple as connecting a multimeter across the cell to measure the voltage? Or is this likely to damage the battery/meter/me!!!

Never used li-ion batteries before and read too many horror stories to start messing about with them.

Thanks

Yes, it is simple. Just make sure your multimeter is set to measure DC Volts, with the leads in the correct sockets (Black in Com, Red in V).

Voltage is a good indicator of the state of charge of a Li-Ion cell. Here is a useful table - the figures are approximate, but they are a good guide:

4.2 volts 100%
4.1 about 90%
4.0 about 80%
3.9 about 60%
3.8 about 40%
3.7 about 20%
3.6 empty for practical purposes
<3.5 = over-discharged
