Is the solution used for chromate conversion coating available for purchase to the general public? If so what should I look for and where should I look?

Glad to be of some help. Close by for you too. They have all kinds of stuff, check out their catalogue. If it can be used to build an airplane, they probably have it.

note alodine 1201 contains small amounts of chromic acid, hydrofluoric acid and ferricyanide.

It's the same gold coating on inner walls of cell tubes we're all familiar with.

Prevents corrosion. Makes a pretty gold finish, looks somewhat like gold anodized.

Alodine 1201 also contains hexavalent chromium (Erin Brockovitch). Hexavalent chromium is a nasty carcinogen/mutagen. I used to use it daily, but I knew what I was doing.

Follow basic chemical handling guidelines to prevent contaminating yourself, your home, or your family. Never wash any article or rag that you get it on, or may have gotten it on. It will contaminate your laundry.

Does anyone have any experience with Pre-Kote? (First item on this page).

Seems to be a more environmentally friendly alternative to alodine. However there isn't the chromate coating. How important is the chromate in creating the "superior" electrical connection touted with Chemkoted interiors?

Also, it also seems to suggest that there is no need for solvent washes (Alumiprep33?). Is that step particularly necessary or can one just scrub up the surface with Scotchbrite and soap?
