Coleman 8d flourecent dimming

Just got the 15 watt model. for some reason it dims after 1sec.
Is there some kind of protection in there? I am running a couple of 3aa to d battery holders in place of two D.

if its a compact florescent theres going to be a ballast there, and ballasts will try to draw more current than those AAs will allow...
there is a reason why they designed it with D cells you know:crazy:

Whats going on at the moment might be a starved ballast and very deep cycled AAs, repeat with all 8 D cells and see if you can replicate the phenomenon.
