Hey guys, I'm going to get some flashlights with some Christmas money I have. I'm pretty new to the flashlight market, so I'm not really sure what's out there. I'm planning on spending about 100USD ± 25%. So here's my question; If you had this money to spend, what would you get. I'd probably prefer not to get any flashlight that's too expensive, because that'd limit what else I could get. I'm generally easily satisfied so I'd prefer to get a few good flashlights to one expensive one. I'm going to start by getting a Fenix E01 but the rest is up in the air. Also, where would you buy your lights from?

You want a collection for less than US$100. I'm guessing you are in the US

I'd get the lot off eBay

1) Start with a cardboard or vulcanite pre-1920 2C or 2D - say $25 inc postage

2) Get a circa-1915 wooden box lantern - say another $30

3) Get a 1950s sealed-beam lantern - about $15, and add $20 for a battery

4) Get a classic chromed tinplate torch of your choice from the 1960s - about $10-15.

Restore all these to cosmetic and running order.

Spend the change on batteries and bulbs, and there you have it - a starter collection to be proud of.

The one piece of advice I will give - buy nothing made after about 1975.
