Well, I thought I'd do a little shootout after groaning about the 1500cd output of the L6. I wish it were more. However, when looking around outside with it, I started to warm to it. But it is expensive.

Here is the shootout I did. I think that most of the information is embedded in the images. Except for the overview shot, the camera was on manual exposure and I attempted to set it so that the SRTH would not clip the whites in the bank. I did accidently leave it on auto white balance so it might have changed the colors a bit.

For reference:
SRTH~15000cd (105l)
SL3~9500cd (?l)
P90~3500cd (105l)
L6~1500cd (>60lm)
TL3LED~700cd (?l)
L4~600cd (>60l)

Very nice comparision ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I like these outdoor shots alot. Little more "real world".

L6 looks pretty good, still not a thrower, thats for sure.

Good job on the pics. L6 is pretty bright, but for me, it is a little to big. The L4 doesn't throw as far but the flood is great for its size. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Awesome shots, and very, very good real-world representation and demonstration of the principle of:

"Choose the right light for the right job !"

yeah, after studying these some more you see that some lights just aren't ideal for working in that 50-60 foot range..

i'd much rather have the L6 than the SRTH or the Tigerlight for working within that range.. look how beautifully it illuminates.. i bet there would be no eye-strain or major lack of nightvision when using that light for comparable distances..

Ryan,

Yes, it does illuminate well--you can see what's outside the immediate circle of interest. The TL3 does that a bit, as does the 9P (I had the oblong pattern at an angle--I probably should have spent more time aligning the lights and probably should have had a white center target.

The L6 is an interesting light with almost double the reach of the L4.

Thanks!

Richard

While the L6 might be soothing to your night sight vision it certainly would not be my go to light to see what is is lurking in the bushes at 50'. (IMHO) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Judging by your pictures it looks as if the TL-3 Incadescent gives you a nice balance for brightness and surround lighting...

Dukester, the TL-3 is a wonderful little light. That's why it's now in my desk drawer--my back is to those bushes when I work late nights with the patio door open on the screen only (yes we can almost still do that in So Cal <smile>).

I've decided to try the L6 in my day bag for a while and see where it gets me. It's useful for what I do, and the idea of it being LED is comforting that it probably won't go POP when I need it.

Cheers,

Richard

Richard,

To echo what others are saying, this is the type of real world review that is so much more useful for immediate appraisal than traditional beamshots. I hope you do more of these.

maybe set something up in the bushes to light up haha.
a would be robber, or wild animal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Edit: well, something with better color variety than the grass anyways..

Thanks, Norm and Ryan,

Yes, I saw many things after the fact that I coulda done better!

Maybe I'll do something else or re-do this or something. But it all takes time--time I could be restoring tapes that actually allows me to return tapes to clients with an INVOICE <smile>.

Since the last time I was active on CPF a year ago, I managed to switch from film to digital photography. You can find out in how big a way by looking at http://www.richardhess.com/smile/ and http://gallery.richardhess.com/
