So from the responces so far I'm assuming that it's better to stick with the HP and get a second more auditoium friendly light...
I like the idea of the Clip-mate light does any one have an opinon on it (can't find any review) and should I get it in green?? or will that make it useless in non-absolute dark situations

During my not so recent hiking trip, my BB500 made for a good flood light. A friend of mine (currently known here as Deviant, was Gila, Saint Tanic, he changes his nick a lot) had an opalec which did a almost equally good job. The only advantage my BB500 has is that it gives a bright even flood. The opalec (3 LEDs) had some kind of a focus spot with little side spill. The BB500 with mcflood reflector, had much more side spill. Very much more than necessary.

3 LEDs in minimally lighted condition (meaning just barely enough to see your feet with, is very good. 3 LEDs in somewhat lighted condition (in a city, off your lights, at nite, the light spill from outside), is so-so. Still good enough to make things out very clearly. But if you are in a room, say a movie theater before the show starts and before the lights dim type of place, it only lights things up a little now. But not to the standard of better than none.

I guess what I want to say is that in a completely dark auditorium, it will reach the other end (50 meters away?). Barely enough for you to make out details. But good enuff to be seen clearly. Even if there is very little light on (just enough for walking) you'll be seen, but you can't use that to see well beyond 20 meters.
 
Lots of good ideas here, I like the 3-123 cell sleeve in the 2C Mag w/6 cell bulb! I also own a UK SL4, that AZMAN mentioned. It has an amazing throw...I'll to wait for dark to see about the 200 yds though, that may be pushing it...
 
Green... the eyes are sensitive to green blue, s'posingly 505nm to 515nm. They won't give good colour rendition as you already have known, but depending on teh colour of the lights around you, they may/may not be that visible. If you want to go green, get something in the colour of emeral green, if blue, lightning blue. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You'll be even happier if you use a 5 cell krypton bulb. In fact, I like the beam I get better from the Radio Shack version than the M#$lite version.
 
hi Nerd, is there any shop in Singapore that sell Lumiled led or Nichia led?

Daylight or cone vision is most sensitive to green. But true night (scotopic/rods only) vision is most sensitive to blue-green/cyan/turquoise.

Think about it - in a convention hall/room - when dimly lit - what's the color of the lighting?
Most probably low level incandescent - which is yellow going toward orange.

So if you wanted a light to be less noticable - first obviously is intensity -
then what color should the light be?

One that has high color contrast? - ie: like green? or blue-green?
I don't think so.....

If it were me, I'd go for the color of the ambient lighting - ie: Yellow/Amber, or possibly orange.

I posted a reply to your same inquiry over on Blade Forums - I have found by experience that I seem to see well with Yellow/amber in both definition and contrast - it gives reasonable color rendition - and disturbs my dark adaption minimally.

Note: <font color="red">Red</font> is the correct color to preserve true night (scotopic/rods only) vision. But if one can see any color then it is NOT scotopic night vision - and any convention environment is UNlikely to be pitch black /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif - in this case almost any color that does not dazzle the eyes (ie: low enough intensity) will do - yellow is well known not to dazzle (hence the long time use as Fog lamps on vehicles) - therefore will aid quick recovery of dark adaption.

Note 2: Some are of the opinion that <font color="green">green </font> or blue-green/cyan/turquoise preserves night vision - if you follow the logic of the note above, one can see this is NOT so - it is used the the military in conjunction with Night Vision (NV) Equipment - ie: it helps not to be seen by NV equipment - not necessarily helping the eyes to see in the dark.

Photons come in yellow in all versions - I suggest looking at the Photon II.

Here's another wrinkle - Photon Mk.1 and Photon 3 have a "covert" option which is simply a tube/hood to mask side emissions from the LED - Photon II's do not have that option. However some masking or duct tape will do the same thing - albeit crude and perhaps tacky looking........

If you are not committed to an incandescant solution, InReTech makes some very good solutions that are quite long on battery life. The TRILIGHT works in either 3 or 4 D-cell Maglights and produces a substantial throw of light for a long time. If your pockets are deep, you might consider the HELIOS, which is five times as powerful as the TRILIGHT, although it does work on 5 or 6 D-Cell Maglights. The battery life is not as great as the TRILIGHT, but if you need a REALLY bright light. One advantage of the TRILIGHT and HELIOS solutions is that they tend not to diminish night vision as much as the incandesant solutions. I suspect this is because the TRILIGHT and HELIOS use collimnators instead of reflectors for beam shaping and the projected beam has better fading characteristics than the piercing spot generated by reflectors. The advantage of this is that tunnel vision problems are not so pronounced and that you can still use your peripheral vision. If you are working without a partner, that could be critical.
 
while these are very cool mods I'm looking for something about 8 inches max so the Maglights are a little big. I'm not only doing security at the covention I'll be running all over the place being a niche filler as well...That's why my setup has to be as versatile as possible.
