My dad has a 1995 Volvo 940 wagon, and the headlights on it really suck. The '84 MB 300D with E codes :) (It is an European market car that was privatly imported, so it still has all of the Euro stuff on it) is much better. Does anyone here know if the sealed beam headlamp assemblies for a 740/760 would fit a 940? I think that would be a cheaper way to put E code headlamps on it than new E code 940 assemblies (US ones are like $500 each).

Thanks in advance.

The pre-'88 760 & pre-'90 740 quad rectangular sealed beam headlight setup does not fit the newer 700/900 cars. If you want E-codes (which are indeed much better in that application) you're gonna hafta bite the bullet and get out yer wallet!

Awww...

Is it possible to modify the housings/ car so that the sealed beam assemblies fit? My dad likes the car, but not enough to spent $1000 on better headlamps.

If I recall correctly, you could swap the front clip (fenders, hood, etc.) to the earlier sheetmetal and then install the quad rectangulars. Probably not cheaper or easier! If you keep your eye on foreign eBay sites, you can sometimes score good used or reasonably-priced new ones.

For anyone wondering what became of this, me and my dad were at a pick-n-pull type junkyard, and noticed that the DOT headlamps that went on the cars with fog lights had glass lenses. What we ended up doing is pulling a set of OEM (Bosch) headlamps, mounting buckets, fog lights, and the trim strip that goes under the lights (We even found a set in metallic dark green, which the color our 940 is painted. What was weird was that the green trim strips were on a black car.). Yes, all of these parts (and a couple others, like a set of baffles to direct air to the radiator, and the turn signals) differ between cars with and without fog lights. We ordered new aftermarket turn signals, and put everything on the car. The headlights are much better now, although I expect the E code headlamps would still be better, but at least I can see at night now! Huge improvement from the 14 year old plastic lensed Cibies. Total cost, for everything (including a fog light switch and relay for the front fogs from the boneyard), was about $150.
