Hey everybody,

I was just wondering if it was possible to make my own cordless phone batteries. I took an old Sanyo and Uniden pack apart and I found out that it was just 3AA NiCads joined at their terminals by a thin piece of metal. I have a few questions

1) Is there anyway to get the same connectors from Radio Shack or some store like that? Or do I have to splice.
2) How do I get the metal to stay on the battery terminals. Is there a conductive glue I can get?
3) Is it safe to put NiMH batteries in if the old packs are NiCads?

As you can see i'm a total newbie, but it would be great if you can answer some of my questions. If there is a website ou there specifically for this, that would be awesome!

Thank you!
Michael

I have a Sanyo HR-AAU AA metal hydride cell for $1.50 with tabs already on them for easy assembly. IF this phone had a smart rapid charger, then I would agree with the non-use of NiMH batteries, but since it is just a slow constant current charge following the 10% rule, NiMH will work fine.
I have replaced all of my cordless phone batteries with NiMH cells because they have no memory effect and actually take to sitting on the charger all the time better than nicads. Sorry to disagree with DrJ. The type of charger is really what determines that. In a number of cases you are very correct. Cordless phone chargers are just a slow charge. Use Super glue or PVC cement to glue the cells together and then solder the tabs. Then throw a piece of heatshrink over the whole thing and hit it with a heat gun for a bit and you are done.

You are correct. They say (manufacturers) that even the NiMH battery needs a deep discharge every once in a great while. I have tried this and have found it never to be necessary. I think by the time you get to where you are having trouble with them, it is time for new ones anyway.
Due to the high self discharge, they do make very poor backup batteries in a bail out bag or the like. Nicads are still the way to go there as the self discharge is less. NiMH are great where you can grab them right out of the charger and go.
