Custom Lens Designer Required (StVZO, Cree XP-L)

Hi,

I write on behalf of a small company here in the UK. I haven't mentioned the name as it could give away our future product portfolio. We have a requirement for a lens/collimator design to meet the following specification, and being this is a niche area we thought it best to try for a specialist with expertise in the field.

1. Accepts a single Cree XP-L 4.8mm^2 emitter.
2. StVZO compliant (soft cut-off etc). These requirements can be provided.
3. Efficiency and beam take precedence over size. We acknowledge the XP-L will make it larger - and that's not a problem.

We will listen to all recommendations. Although StVZO has requirements there's still room for some manoeuvre and here the designer is free to use best judgement.

A contract will be drawn up between both parties detailing specification, expectations and payment terms. The lens will undergo StVZO certification, which has a cost implication, so the designer will have to be competent and confident!.

Just a note: StVZO, (short for Straßenverkehrszulassungsordnung) doesn't work on a self-certification basis; StVZO uses type approval (just like automotive lighting in UNECE signatories).

Not just the lens, the entire lamp, but also manual undergoes certification. There are requirements for the manual, housing, mount, wiring if cables are external, resistance of the lens to certain chemicals, status display for battery powered lamps, and of course the beam pattern.

Edit: As you are in the UK you will also need a EU or EEA based representative. Companies outside the EEA are not allowed to hold an StVZO approval and the UK is no longer in the EU since Brexit nor is it part of the EEA. As to whether the UK will be/could be/want to be part of the EEA: It is unlikely to become part of the EEA according to an article I read due to the countries that are in the EEA and how they look at the UK possibly entering that...

I suppose the beam pattern is actually not a problem in the sense that if you make a fairly sharp cutoff, you're really there. There are quite a few more requirements that are actually unclearly written (and some are wrong) about brightness requirements further down from the cutoff, but I think just about all lamps get through (irrespective of the the reflector's or lens' designers not having realised that the specs for 20+ lux beam pattern are wrong in one place), by virtue of producing enough light...
