When "search" fails then I ask :candle:

Just recently upgraded one of my Mag 5D's from a Terra Lux Mini Star 5 to a TLE300 (for no other reason than all my various D cell mags had Mini Star 5 upgrades which were getting boring, albeit excellent run time and general brightness) finding out that I needed to purchase a "D" serial number host was a learning curve along the way also.

Not withstanding the different weight of the newer "D number Mags" to older "serial number only" I had to use some "D cell primaries" (alkaline) to replace in my older 5D "D number Mag" with the old Mini Star 5 and took it out in the dark to compare with my new 5D "serial number only" now fitted with the 300M and NiMH batts (2150mAh).

Well did I get a shock when picking up the two units, bugger the light test, that was now a secondary issue. The weight difference is incredible

So unable to access the Kitchen to get out the scales (wifey hates me borrowing the kitchen scales to weight things out in the shed, NB to self get some kitchen scales for the shed) I shall ask the question here, where I am sure I will get accurate analysis of my question:

What are the significant weight variations between Alkaline and NiMH?
Is this across the board or just limited to various chemistry's/compounds or manufacturers?
My D-cell NiMH are only 2150 mAh (generic local DSE made in China) if I purchased some D-cell NiMH with 12000+ mAh (as I am planning) would they be significantly heavier than the 2150 mAh?

Over to you my learned friends: lovecpf

(By the way the TLE 300 is quite impressive and on par with my Olight M30 from my basic observations)

Depending on capacity D cell NiMh's weigh from 165-175gram for 10-11.5A.
Low capacity flea-bay cheaters weigh 50 grams less ie 110-125grams.

Given the low capacity and light weight I would bet your "D" cells are really a smaller cell in a plastic shell. Like this:

+1. Most likely You're "really" using AA cells in D-clothing.

Even the NiCD D-cells I had over 20 years ago had 4000 mAH capacity. And they were really light, fwiw. But the Accupower NiMH LSD D-cells I have now are really heavy suckers. Though I've never compared them directly to alkalines the heft was immediately noticeable and I'd bet that they're heavier.

Thanks team, I knew you would put me on the right track.
Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to carefully dissect one of my NiMH D-cells. And behold what do I find, a smaller "Sub C" size batt suspended in the middle of what you could only describe as a plastic adapter!

I might as well have just used some of those available adaptors in the first instance with my Eneloop AA's.

Guess I will be doing some on line shopping with our preferred retailers to purchase some "real" NiMH D-cells for some of my Upgraded Mags that need long run times but the lightweight cells should be fine for some of the Mags that just sit around the house for "just in case" scenarios.

Just finishing up making some charging adapters to charge NiMH D-cells in my new Maha C9000.
