D Cell Charger for 10 cells

Hi guys, First post here...I am looking for a D cell battery and charger combo that will work well in a Bose Acoustic Wave II radio. The radio takes 10 D cells and I use it on weekends so the charger should be able recharge 10 D's over night and also be able to safely hold them in the charger for a week or so at a time.

Seems like a lot of people here like Tenergy Premium 10000 D cells and the maha mh-c808m charger. I think the Tenergys will work well only problem for me is I need a charger that takes 10 at a time nso the Maha wont work. Any recommendations for a 10 D cell smart charger that'll do what I need it to do?
 
You need a 10 D slots charger... I have never seen one but maybe they are available and i don't know..

i had the same problem finding one to charge my 6 x D batteries that i use in my maglite... I ended up using a pvc pipe with the right diameter and right lenght.. Just dump the cell in (6 batteries in series) turn the tube in vertical position so that they make contact due to gravity and use 2 magnets to connect an rc charger...

hope you understand something from my bad english ....
 
I have two MAHA chargers that will handle D cells. 16 total cells can be charged. Expensive? Yes! Good chargers? Yes!
 
I have 4 chargers capable of charging D cells. One is just a cheap 'dumb charger', not actually used, one is a Tenergy charger that works well, just slow and display is flakey, one is a Titanium md3000, it worked for a few months then makes noise sqealing sound and lights up so I avoid, then the Maha 808-it's like 90.00 but it's worth the coin it you want something that is going to work well and doesn't feel like a toy.

there is no such charger on the market, the fastest, and easiest solution, is to buy 2 chargers. not the cheapest one, however. Or you can build one yourself, get D holders from radio shack, wire them in series, and buy inexpensive smart charger, like battery space sells. with 2A charging current.

Buy 10 more D cells and call it a day...

You have all week to re-charge them.

A MAHA C808M for example does 8 at a time.


On Monday, do 8, on Tu do 8, on Wed do 4, and you have 20 D cells ready to go for the following weekend.

On Sat use 10, on Sun, use 10, there's your 20 D cells.

Come Monday, repeat the process.


Obviously, you could Do M-W-F or any other 3 day rotation...or, do two charges in one day (AM/PM), etc...whatever fits your schedule.


10k mah white label Tenergy D cells are ~ $7-8 each, so ~ $70 or so to get 10 of them, vs, buying another charger...and the addition of being sure you have spares.

Plan C - IIRC, it takes ~ 5 hours to recharge 8 D cells...so...

Charge the 10 before you go....use them on Sat, and you'd need less than 10 hours total to recharge all 10 again for use on Sunday.


Plan D - Just get a smaller second charger that can do the other two cells if you already have an 8 cell charger, or two that do 5, and so forth. Most do 2, 4, 6, 8, etc....but you get the idea.



Overall, for a stress free weekend, I'd just get another 10 D's, and my weekend is covered....esp if the power goes out/I forget to recharge Sat night, etc.

Well, me - I just have a LOT of chargers, as I also use them for lights, etc...so I personally have more cells, and more chargers than I regularly need, but which are VERY handy when TSHTF, etc.

If you really want to charge all 10 at once with a single charger reasonably quickly you'll have to use a RC / Hobby charger. You can get a bunch of D cell holders and make a recharging rig.
 
I think one charger is plenty if its the 808. Just buy extra sets of batteries. Though, if you use them alot, two chargers is the only answer as a recycle charge on a bunch of D cells would take a week on one charger. Have a lot, but the run time on them is so long, rotating them in the charger isn't an issue.

Just remember that charging batteries together like this is NEVER a good idea from the standpoint of battery life. You're always bound to overcharge at least some of them by doing this. A MUCH better idea is to buy two chargers. Perhaps this isn't the cheapest way to go. But it's certainly the best.

Also, as far as battery choice, depending on how you use your radio, LSD Tenergy Centuras may or may not be a better idea than Tenergy Permiums. The Premiums would be better for long periods of continuous use. But the Centuras are better for intermittent use where the radio is to be used for relatively short periods of time.

It all depends how closely matched the cells are. RC packs have been charged like this for years.
 
The good chargers charge multiple cells at a time, individually anyway.
 
With rc chargers you can charge up to 15 cells of nimh/nicd... And the best way to do that is in series!

For this to work the batteries must be wired together in a pack and be same brand, capacity, age and usage.
Then you start with a slow charge (12 to 16 hours at 0.1C) to get all batteries to the same charge state.
After that you can discharge and charge the pack at normal speed.

Yes, if the cells aren't matched individual charging is best. However, using unmatched cells isn't a great idea if he's really going to run down the batteries. The same characteristics that cause problems when series charging multiple unmatched cells can cause problems when discharging them also. Things that can cause one cell to end up at 0V or with a reversed charge...
 
I'm going to vote for something like the Maha 808 and two sets of ten batteries, for a total of twenty. Charge all of them up initially, install one set and never look back.

Mark the batteries A1-A10 with the date and B1-B10 with the date and keep track of stuff.
