A month or so ago I converted my 3D mag to a TV1L Lux3. I thought it was pretty cool and have had a good time playing around with it. I have been out in some fields at night to see what kind of throw it had and compared to anything else I have it was awesome. I have been reading some old posts that have estimated the throw of their DD 3D Lux3s up to 300 yards and one I even saw said a 5' hotspot at 450 meters. There is no way I am getting that kind of throw from mine. I'd say that with mine I am getting more like a 15' hotspot at 150 yards. That's just a guess since I haven't been very scientific about it. Like I say it's far better than anything I have but I want more. Have I done something wrong in the construction of my light or are these other estimates overly optimistic?

5' at 45 meters is a 0.2 degree beam.. personal laser pointers are not that focused.. what does that tell you? 15' at 150 yrds is 2 degree which sounds like fraan (sp) optic (tight).

I've clocked my 4D Mag (TW0L) at 330 yards, but I can tell you the hotspot is HUGE.. 15-20' sounds like it. I'm using the stock Mag reflector cut down - this is the OA4D Cookbook Mag.

I went to double check the post and it does say a "~5' hotspot at ~1500'(450m)" from a DD Lux3 on 3 C cells. I am not using a fraen optic on mine, just the stock reflector like KevinL so my guesstimate may be too optimistic as well. I am not good at judging distance so determining the diameter of circle at an already unknown distance would not be my forte. If you've put a 4D at 330 yards then maybe mine is normal. I was just surprised at the numbers I was seeing and figured if they were accurate then maybe I could correct something and get that kind of throw too. Doesn't sound like it. Thanks for the replies.

Well.. my megasonic has 4 lux 3s three in 17mm reflectors and one in a 27mm.. it puts out a hell of a beam.. but it's probably good for 400-500'..

The distance your light is able to throw sounds about right I don’t think anything is wrong with the mod. Yes you will be able to light up highly reflective targets at range but the useful Light’m Up beam falls off before 100 yards.
