de threading plastic threaded rod

i have a piece of threaded rod that needs to be dethreaded. i want to make a kubaton/pocket stick/poking device. i only have access to limited tools so i cant just chuck it into a lathe and have at it

A file and a pair of vice grips will get rid of the threads, but it takes a while to get good at that.

I have used a bench grinder and belt sanders to do similar tasks. I've also chucked rods in a drill so it rotates evenly while I'm doing the grinding.
