Greetings....
Last night I did replace the Luxeon star with a SSC star in my Taktika XP headlamp.
Bad thing was that I did not recorder the Luxeon beam to compare. It seems to me that the SSCed Petzl has a wider hotspot than the original. And some thin yellowish ring almost at the edge of the spill area. But I got to have a confirmation of this from people that have worked on this
I know there is the SSC emitter height issue and indeed there was about 0.30 inch difference on die height measured from the base of each star. But is this an issue of beam shape change with the Petzl lens?
In that case I am not that unhappy. I have been using this headlamp with the clear diffuser on anyway when I walk around, and I do not see a reason for a long-throwing headlamp anyway.
(As a true flashaholics I have more than 3 flashlights when I go outdoors)
Now some more observations.
1. Without recording the previous state I have only my memory to use in the comparison, but it seems to me that the difference between the 3 output levels is smaller now. Understandable if you see a Lumens vs Watt curve comparison. The P4 curve rises faster than any Luxeon.
2. Boost is spectacular
3. Before moding I took some Vf measurements from the Lux I LED
Boost – 3.00 volts
High – 3.00 volts
Medium – 2.92 volts
Low – 2.82 volts
Why that difference? Anything to do with the Petzl headlamps not being regulated or is the LED current AND voltage regulated?
thanks all beforehand, kostas
