Can anyone kind enough to tell me how to tell the difference between a modified Pelican Reflector and a McR-27?

Not much; the McR-27 has a more efficient reflective coating and should yield more lux on the light meter.
But it's almost the same thing...

If you have one of each, side by side, The McR-27 looks brighter. The reflective coating also rolls a bit around and over the lip of the reflector.

I do have one of each, side by side, the McR-27 does look slightly brighter. Any idea when your McR-17 will be available at the shoppe?

The McR-17 is not planned for production at present. I had sample McR-25's and McR-17's made, both using the same parabolic formula that I came up with and after evaluating them, I chose to combine the two with the McR-20. The 17 can be made by chopping a section off the 20. The McR-17 is very similar to the so17xa and the so17xa is already available. I prefer Al to plastic for a few reasons but my finances are strapped and I don't think the modders demands would justify the expense of bringing in the McR-17. I had plans for doing a head for the 17 mm but in an E series compatable head, I felt the greater efficiency of the 20 mm would over ride the only advantage of a shorter head hosting the 17. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif When the Aleph 2's get out in population and are compared to the 17 mm reflectors as well as the KL4 and Arc4 reflectors, I believe you will see my point. For any given head diameter, I have come to prefer maximum diameter and depth of reflector possible. This is of course based on concentrating the light into a focused beam. A flood light is a different story.

If I were working on a CR2 or AA based light, the McR-17 would have merit. I'm not so it doesn't. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think there will be many good lights utilizing the so17xa so it doesn't make sense for me to travel down the same path. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

I also prefer Al to plastic, so any chances for me to buy a couple of your McR-17 sample piece?

Albert,
I only got a couple and they were not plated with reflective material. I figured I could polish them up and they would be good enough for beam evaluation. there really should be no problem in chopping down some 20's into 17's. I don't have time now to try it but perhps after Cambria I can do a couple.
