Well, I got a number of Lux1/3 emiters from various upgrades laying around, just dieing to be used... So I'm thinking, would direct driving them off 4 LR44 cells be an option? I figure the internal resistance should be high enough to keep the current low enough, just like with 5mm leds, but maybe it will be too low?

Figure if it'll work, and I can find a good...something... to use as a housing, I could make couple of nifty little keychain lights to give away

Even if you can do it, what's the point? Button cells don't last long even when driving 5mm LEDs. Driving a luxeon would kill them too soon to be of any use, IMO.
You could maybe do something with a tiny LiIon such as the 10180 used in the Lummi Wee.
