I forgot to mention that I find their smell horrendous.

This topic reminded me of the skunk Bear Grylls eat in Baja.

He stated that the meat tasted like steak that your buddies smeared in dog feces...lol

The funniest part that this video doesn't include was that he used the same jacket, used to wrap the skunk, as a pillow that night. I would have died if I did that. Severe emotional trauma.

Surprisingly, I never actually had the "opportunity" to smell skunk. Raccoons are about the only local wildlife here besides birds, squirrels, and stray cats.

Raccoon scat is about the worst here, no skunks, thankfully

Where I live we get "skunked" nightly, I have no use for those vile vermin.:xyxgun:

I'll remember to keep my B/W striped sweatshirt at home next time I pass by your house:nana:

Yes, I like the mild smell of skunk. I do no like the intense smell of skunk when my dog got sprayed. THAT was most unpleasant!! :green: :sick2:

Yes, IMO they smell bad, but no where near as bad as some things... like dead animals, sewers, etc.

Actually, I've known people that have had pet snunks. When they are "defumed", they make nice, gentle pets (where legal).

Neighbors every spring typically have a family of skunks that nests under their front porch. They've called exterminators, but so far haven't caught mama.

They also have three dogs, so the follwing scenario has been repeated many times and goes like this:
  • I see their back porch light go on late at night,
  • hear the rattle of the dog chain,
  • then hear the dog chain take off with a scream
  • hear groggy neighbor swear at dog at the top of their lungs
  • oily, putrid smell of skunk drifts in through my window
  • neighbor swearing louder threatens to give dog to vietnamese restaurant
Babies are cute, but they're stupid and won't avoid yards with dogs. Buddy of mine used to have an Akita that learned how to kill the things quick enough before they sprayed.

Yeah, pretty bad smell for most of us. Years ago one of my dogs had a scrape with a skunk, and lost, really lost bad. Smell bothered my dog and our family when he came trotting into the house. We issolated him for awhile, got several cans of tomato juice from the store and poured it over him rubbing it in. Let is sit for awhile on him, then washed him down later with water. Smell disappeared. Nasty stuff, both the odor and the tomato juice, the way we used it. The acid in the tomato juice must neutralize the skunk spray.

Not necessarily...

LOL

Show me a fat kid who doesn't like cake, and I'll show you a mom who intentionally makes bad tasting cake so her fat kid ends up hating cake, and hopefully loses some weight. If I gave you an M6, you'd be happy; right? If I gave you a .99 cent, cluster LED light that stopped working after a few minutes, you wouldn't be so happy. If all you could ever buy were the crappy .99 cent lights, eventually you'd no longer buy more lights. Same difference as with the fat kid and the bad cake.

Not many skunks around these parts tho, so I wouldn't know what they smell like in the wild... Did sniff a 'this is what a skunk smells like' thingie in the zoo once, but it smelled more of wet cardboard than anything else...

Wet cardboard??

Oh no.... Definitely not the same thing.... Not even close. It's like getting a date with a Supermodel who just came from a photo-shoot vs. getting a date with the 60 year-old homeless woman who screams at random pedestrians. They're both female, and yet.... it's not the same! :shakehead

 Your analogies, Take the Cake!

The time my dog chased one of them into the cabin and then around the room twice (Spraying all over the place)before I could kick it out sure made some bad smell. And it lasted for one hell of a long time too. I left the cabin open, burned my clothing and went home, the dog road home in the back of the truck, he was lucky I did not go through with the shooting as I had calmed down a bit.

One a damp day you could still catch a faint smell of it years later.

On a Skunk-related note . . . .

Many years ago, i read a very funny and entertaining short story

in an "Outdoors" type of monthly magazine.

(Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, ???)

The story was by a fellow named Patrick F. McManus,

and was entitled: " The Skunk Ladder ".

Thanks to the miracle of Internet Technology,

i've just now been able to locate this article, once again.

Everyone should have the joy of being sprayed at least once...or at the very least have to clean up your dog that got sprayed. It is so special of an experience.

I've been sprayed a couple of times, when I was trapping. A sinus infection took away most of my sense of smell, but it still stung my eyes quite a bit, and people wouldn't get near me for a week...
