Oh man! I just finished my 3rd day at work at my new job. It has been all orientation up to this point. They showed me the toolboxes I'll be working out of. The only flashlights are 3 D Mags. That's it. Absolutely NO PERSONAL TOOLS allowed! Not even an arc AAA. What's even worse, they're red 3 D Mags. I hate the color red.

I think the regs are too hardcore, myself. I like using my own tools. My box is silhouetted & inventoried, and I am a professional. If I lose a tool, I find it. Or if I can't find it right away, I report it, and search until it's found.

Oh well, I guess that's how it is, with the Air Force as a customer.

Are you forced to use a specific light in your job?

Yikes, can't imagine that happening to any of us flashaholics here.../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/faint.gif You have to do something! Go on strike or something!! Of all the lights they could choose... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif I feel for you Shankus...

Here's a thought, maybe right after you knock off or something you should show your co-workers some of your lights (the REAL ones), that might make 'em change their minds!!

All I can say is... Good luck with your new light... errr... job!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

How bout sneaking in an Everled bulb into the Mag while no one is looking? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

When last I worked for the USAF we were issued the good ol' anglehead Double-Ds and Eveready 2AA penlights. That's what we used. No sense of humor.

So what you're saying is that you're looking for a new job? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I thought about adding the line "Should I quit?" to my post. But it seems, I didn't have to, huh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif
This is truly the scourge of a flashaholic.

They are so big, for what they are capable of. I thought some Streamlight Propolymer 4AA LED lights would be a good toolbox light. With two sets of NiMH AAs per light, there would be much tax-money saved (besides the fact that bulb replacement costs would go away).
I also thought about putting an EverLED in them, when I chit them out, but the side emitter is too fragile to swap out time after time. Hmm, perhaps an Epeion?
I just don't know if I can take the yellow incandescent lights anymore. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

It may be an inventory issue, so someone can look at the toolbox and know that all tools are accounted for and there isn't a wrench in a jet engine somewhere.

I'd push the money savings issue. Where I work, there are certain tools we are not allowed to supply, and the ones the customer supplies are junk. Thankfully, I can use my own for the numerous things they don't supply, so I can get my job done. I hate saying I can't do something because I don't have the components I need.

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

When I worked in a Nuclear Power Plant, we were issued a Mine Safety Approved flashlight. Orange in color, sealed, and had a little spring thing over the bulb and used 2 D sized batteries. There was certification data from several government agencies printed on it. It was rated for use in explosive atmospheres(sp).

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

Yes and no.

We are required to use non-incendive rated flashlights in flammible atmospheres and company issued E2e's everywhere else.

And what would happen to you at work if you got caught using some other flashlight?

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

The place could go BOOM if you used the wrong flashlight in the wrong area! The approved lights were also non-conductive, so if it was dropped into an electrical cabinet, there would be a chance of not shorting something out!

Use of flashlights was governed by the Safety Manual. Violation of the Safety Manual could get you fired!

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

ok, I understand about using special lights so nothing goes BOOM, etc.... but I'm just taking about shankus work.
We all know his stock Mag he has to use is nothing special, right?
So I'm wondering what the big deal is if shankus uses some other light for work. What would happen to you?

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

wow...gregr you're issued E2e's at work? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

Jeez! Everywhere I've EVER worked, I was lucky to be issued a key(s)!

So no, I don't have to use any certain light, or screwdriver, or ratchet etc.

Re: Have to use certain flashlights at work?

My guess on this - if one of those big fat red Mags gets lost or forgotten inside a jet engine, people know exactly what to look for... Hey, they're crap but quite easy to find /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I get three violations of the tool control policy, and then termination.
I would be written up each time.

The policy, in this particular program isn't because of explosive atmosphere, just losing tools, that could cause a problem, or down an aircraft.
It is the strictest policy I've had so far. At Northrop Grumman, I used my own tools, but they had to be silhouetted & inventoried. Mine already were, though.

chamenos-

About a month after I started this new job, I realized ny boss was a gaget junky. One day after convincing a co-worker HE needed an E2e, we cornered the boss. I pulled out my older E2 and said "hey look at this little gem!"

That was all it took, he looks at me and says "find out where you can get a half dozen for a good price, and pick up 3 dozen batteries too" They replaced a bunch of Red 3-D cell Maglites. The guys love them. At a recent training drill at another site the guys over there saw our E2e's, now I'm ordering another five and 100 batteries.
