Here's what I do. I print out 1/2"x1-1/2" labels onto 8.5"x11" plain paper then cut it down with scissors accordingly. Every light I own that has a big enough battery compartment to hold it gets one, which in my collection includes everything except a Photon REX which I'm not too worried about.

chose "careful" but that doesnt describe me at all.

you are lacking some answers for other end of spectrum in your poll.

like one for of method that i live by.

Never carry/use anything you cannot replace.

I know it might break, get stolen or just simple misplaced/lost.

never buy a thing you really cant afford to replace or take the risk of loosing it. mental preparedness. it is just a thing. it is a tool, use it like one. :)

You need another option in your poll. I can not put my info in my lights. I work security and I do not want every drunk to know my personal information.

I chose "No, I'm too careful with mine to ever worry about losing them."

But the truth isnt that I'm too careful, I'm just too lazy :tinfoil:

Can one of the mods please either delete this thread or help me out on the options? I'm afraid I offered too few choices to pick from for responses. :sigh:

I went with "Depends" and "No" -- in truth, I suppose it would depend, but I don't yet own any light expensive enough for me to engrave it as protection against theft, and I'm sufficiently careful and lazy not to bother with non-permanent ID (like a paper slip) in case of loss.

And part of why I don't have expensive lights is that I couldn't carry them; like NonSenCe said, a carry light is a tool, and while I won't abuse it gratuitously, I'm prepared to lose whatever I have invested in it. Few really expensive lights seem to offer advantages worth the risk of loss -- more of them are shelf-queens, which I have little time for. There are a few, though; when I have the money...

Only when I send one out for engraving.

Also, I have no lights with my own name engraved on them -- but I DO have a couple of lights with made up names engraved on them.

I have never felt the need to do so. I am confident in my ability to to either not lose the light or to find it if it were lost. However, you have given me some idea. if I can find a good way to affix a small piece of paper to my light, I think I will do that. Simply my first name, last initial and cell phone number. An easy way to give out enough info to get your light back, but not enough for someone to stalk and kill you!

It's a good idea. I don't do it often, but I have done it. If you're planning on losing a light, make sure you put your note in it BEFORE you lose the light.

Watch out, there. There's a lot of information around, and it's conceivable they can link your mobile number back to (if not your full name or address) some online identity, and trace more and more info out.

An anonymous email address (hotmail or similar) might be a better bet, if stalking's a real concern for you.

Wrap the battery(ies) with a post-it note with your info on it. If the light is particularly valuable, maybe the word "reward" on the note might help.

I put a slip of paper with contact info in every light that is big enough. so basically everything other then my photons and fenix e01

This sounds like a great idea ....

I wouldn't want people to pick my name, address, phone number, etc if they find or steal my light. I keep my EDC in my briefcase, so if I lose that, the flashlight is the least of my worries.

Well, these days all that info is probably available over the internet, and not to mention the phone book if you're listed in it. Isn't that for the most part public information?

Yes, that kind of information is probably available for someone motivated and savvy enough to dig it up. But, a few pieces of information are needed to begin a search. The more contact information you leave on your light, the greater the risk. If there is absolutely no information on the light, there should be no risk at all.

True. Unless, of course, it's found in a briefcase chock-full of identity leads... :D

I'm in the no category for almost everything. The bigger lights all go in cases and I have IDs in some of those. I should consider putting slips in some though. Good topic.
