I just got a PS3. When would not so good AVI support come in to play? If you're burning your own DVD's?
A friend and I have been unimpressed in general with mpeg4 decoding on his PS3, relative to my original Xbox w/XBMC, based on random AVI's I've downloaded. I don't know which codecs are lacking or missing, but the PS3 has been unable to decode some, and even those that it manages to decode have significantly more visible macroblocks and other artifacts compared to playback on my Xbox. The PS3 has a lot more horsepower, so it's got to be lower quality and/or missing codecs.

I don't enjoy watching on the monitor so I picked up a few of the 1080P upconverting that play DiVX/AVI files. Very happy now and I don't have to convert the AVI to VOB so it saves pooter time. :)

Agreed. Saves so much time.
And with dual layer blanks affordable, no more messing with shrinking programs for 4.7 GB discs either.

But a Blu-Ray burner is definitely in my sights in the future...
