DX 5-mode R2 drop-in tops out at 8.4v, will 9V be ok?

I just ordered a 5-mode R2 drop in from DX with a max input voltage of 8.4V that I was intending to use in a C3. Of course 2 17500s' would be perfect but could I run 3 primaries in it safely? I'm thinking that .6v won't be too much of an overdrive.... its supposed to be 250 lumens on high! Can't wait to get it. I wonder what the current draw is for that level...

Max voltage is ususally the maximum functional voltage.

IIRC, 3.0v isn't the starting voltage for CR123 primaries. Isn't it usually more like 3.2v?
