Hello Led fans

Just been reading some of the great threads on homemade led dynamo setups here . I have a friend who has a bike shop that mainly deals with old fashioned dutch bikes that have tend to have dynamo's with big chrome housings and vaccuum bulbs. We were discussing a ways which we could introduce LED lights to these kind of setups. One way being the bridge rectifier route, fashioning new bulb holders within the old housings etc, however one customer of his had come up with something quite simple that he soldered into the old screw-in vacuum bulb housing. (pic below) basically its a rear led with 125ohm resistor and an led with a 1.67v drop (not sure what led this is) one of the advantages being that the lower current draw allowed more current to the front vacuum bulb, another being it didn't die as fast.

Can anyone improve on the design?, I was wondering if there wasn't some way to add an led front light consisting of a couple of components soldered together? or is having a separate bridge rectifier board the only way?

also wondering if anyone anywhere sells any kind of drop in led replacement for vacuum bulbs? I couldn't find much searching.
