e1e mod. stock bezel borred, vs NXO5??

Help Support Candle Power:

I haven't actually tackled an e1e head yet, but it's on my to do list. In my experience though, modding KL4 with the reflector and 1W LEDs, I'd take a reflector over an optic any day. The only thing is the heat.

Are you talking about boring the E1e head to accept an optic? I'd go with the KL1 if you're gonna do that. It's a little bigger, but it handles the heat better. If you go with the reflector, which is what I'd do, stay conservative with the current. Like 400 or 500mA and it should be a very nice light. I've wanted a modded E1e head for awhile. I've seen the pics and they are impressive.

I just finished up an E1e with a Fraen LP and Q3J HD. Let me just say the light output is MUCH higher with the optic. The sidespill is far larger with the reflector but at the expense of too much central brightness, IMHO.

The only problem with using the optic is that you can't use the standard E-sink/E-can arrangement.

The SE would be a better choice for a reflector mod in the Exe series. I think that's probably why Don and Wayne decided to offer the SE E-sink at the shop.

perfect timing on this post

i was about to post asking if anyone has done a luxeon mod on the stock bezel. that's what i would like to get done as the KL1 bezel seems a good bit bigger. anyone got picture comparison? pics at all?

Chief,
How's the heat in that mod of yours? What sort of circuit are you running and at what current? How does your mod with the optic compare to the reflector with the SE?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I've been intending to do a similar mod, just because of the size.

I'm driving a Q3J HD with a BB700 and it does get quite hot. Although, I haven't tried to run it continuously yet to see if I hit thermal shutdown with the BB.

The reflector with the SE yields a wider more even beam although it's slightly less bright. Of course with the Fraen LP, you get a super bright hotspot that's sufficiently large, but not very much sidespill.

Unless you feel like making a custom module for your E-series light, I'd go with the SE/reflector combo since the parts are readily available.

The last 5W SE star I got from future active was binned V4V so maybe the luxeon lottery isn't so much of a lottery anymore...
