E2DL-BK vs LX2 LumaMax... Which to buy?

I want a powerful, well-built, small-to-medium-sized, long-lasting LED light.

This light will be used for walking my dog at night, camping, hunting, around-the-house use, emergencies, etc.

I would prefer the light be able to illuminate objects in the distance well, rather than provide a good floodlight-type beam. If I need more of a floodlight-type beam, I am perfectly fine with purchasing a diffuser to accomplish that.

As far as I can tell, Surefire offers 2 excellent options: Surefire's E2DL and Surefire's LX2 LumaMax.

I have read the following threads here exploring the new LX2 (and in some cases comparing it to the E2DL):

As far as I can tell, there is little noticeable difference between the two in terms of light output. I want the more powerful of the two, whichever that is. But the E2DL is about $47 cheaper. What other features would steer me towards the LX2? Am I missing something?

Which should I choose and why?

Also, should I purchase additional Surefire 123A batteries at the same time or not? Is there another brand of battery with a higher CPF approval?

Yea, I read that in one of the threads. Apparently with the E2DL you have to cycle through high to get to the low setting. That is slightly annoying.


I can purchase a diffuser to make either the LX2 or E2DL more of a floodlight-type beam, right?

The LX2 is more powerful, but the E2DL is plenty bright for all your needs, less expensive, cooler, more fun to play with, and better as a last defense in hand-to-hand combat against any dog-haters you may encounter at night.

+3 on the LX2 UI - very intuitive (much more so than the E2DL):

• For momentary use: press for low, press harder for high.
• For constant-on use: twist for low, twist further for high.
• In addition, while in constant-on low: press for momentary-high.

+ 4 LX2. I jumped on it after reading just a bit about it when I first found this forum and having owned one for about 2 months now and having read much more and playing with it tons I haven't had a second thought or regret. Second lights (and thirds and fourths) are another story.

So the LX2 is like a kroma or aviator UI? no clicky? I prefer clickys. E2DL can be bought for a decent price if you shop around. used will be of course the cheapest. i found mine just the other day at a gun shop for $125. it had been opened but looked brand new to me.

LX2 does not have a clicky. The UI reminds me of the A2 and the L1. Push slightly for low, press button all the way in for high.

I own an LX2 and have previously owned an E2DL.. Both are top quality lights, but I strongly suggest the LX2 - and Welcome to CPF

In my opinion, it's strictly a matter of which tailcap (UI) style you prefer. Personally, I'll take an E2DL clickie any day over the LX2 style twisty.

On paper, the 200 lumen LX2 sounds impressive, but based on some comments here on CPF, the light is not noticeably brighter than the E2DL. It makes me wonder if Surefire simply changed the manner in which they measured/rated the lumen output. I also really like the throw of the E2DL, as well as, the looks/styling of the E2DL.

On paper in my opion the Lx2 is brighter...
I have both and i love the Lx2 for its low then high output and it`s throw on low and high.

E2DL is a great EDC exept for it`s high then low output. But i love the E2DL for it`s power and candle standing features.

All in all, i would have to give the edge to the LX2 :twothumbs

They are very similar in output. Check my beamshots.

If you prefer clicky, get the E2DL, if you prefer momentary two stage push, with constant on via twisting the tailcap, get the LX2...

The hotspot is larger on the LX2.

They both throw nicely.

The E2DL is a little slimmer.

It really comes down to this...

Clicky or twisty??
Do you like Black or Olive Drab??

Ugh.... This is a difficult choice. :sigh: Any other ways I could make my decision easier?

So far, here's where it stands for me:

Brightness (low setting): LX2
Beam Pattern: Tied
UI Type: E2DL
UI Ease-of-use: LX2
Quality/Look: Tied
Clip: Tied
Price: E2DL

Again though, should I purchase extra Surefire 123A batteries with the light? Or is there a better (more CPF-approved) brand of 123A battery?

Maybe I should just buy both... LOL!
