E2L Outdoorsman Question

My local outdoor store carries E2L's with 45 lumens as the output, single level I believe if I remember correctly from the packaging. On SF's website it says the E2L puts out 60/3 lumens ?? I noticed the "improved performance". Is that a newer updated version of the E2L, and were previous versions putting out 40-45 lumens?

The first Cree version of the E2L was released in 2007, and it had a single level at 45 lm. It runs in regulation for nine hours.

In 2008 a revised version was released with two levels. The high level is brighter but has a lower regulated runtime at about 6 hours.

Before 2007, the E2L used a Luxeon III emitter, with less output (~30 lm) and 2.5 hours of regulated runtime.

The E2L's you are looking at will run 9 hours flat regulation. There are some runtime graphs on CPF. Do a search. Usually the output is higher than the advertised 45 lumens, and my "improved" E2L has an estimated 80 lumens for 6 hours, flat runtime, on high (estimated output using bounce with a light meter and comparison to other lights).

IMHO you are looking at the best version of E2L out there. It's long runtime makes it a CPF favorite.

I have both versions, well a Kl1 on an E2 body plus the updated version and I prefer the newer one. The runtime on low is insanely long with plenty of lumens for most tasks.

That's the best version of the E2L, buy two or three and keep 'em!

anyway to tell superficially what version?

If the packaging hasn't changed recently, then:

- The newest version has its package marked with "NEW DUAL OUTPUT LED"

- The single-level Cree version has its packaged marked with "HIGHER OUTPUT, MORE RUNTIME"

- The older Luxeon version has neither of these.

does the single mode cree version have a domed lense and a square beam? or is this a lux 3 version?? I'm not sure which one I have

i already have a 2 level e2l outdoorsman, but a couple of months ago i found a good deal on a new 2007 version and picked it up. the run times are really nice. the outdoorsman aren't super bright so to speak, but do provide a long run time; they are the lights i keep in my cars for emergencies.

The 2008 E2L, called that by CPF'ers, is the single mode, Cree LED model. What is referred to as the dual stage E2L, or 2009 E2L by CPF'ers, is the dual stage output model. Previous E2L's had Luxeon LED's.

the old versions are marked by a sharpie on the bottom of the KX2 positive contact, but no, looking at the light without the carton or packaging is impossible to tell the difference

ah... I have a sharpie mark and it's a single stage. I bought it in 2007 (ish?) So I think it's the 45 lumen version? Yeah? (Whats the model/head# whatever?) Thanks.

(Gotta love the sharpie marker model# indicator *rolls eyes)

**oh, re-reading, "KX2" is the name of the head eh?

I just recently reremembered I had this thing, I had "stored" it in my toolbox....and have rerecently discovered it :) Man is it beatup....ermmm "well loved"

*reminds me I miss having a momentary on... *goes off to buy a tactical quark so I can play legos

Yes you can tell the two apart by simply looking at the outside of the light.

There is a serial number written on the head of the light. If it begins with an A, it is a single mode 45 lumen version, if it begins with a B, it is a dual mode, 60 lumen/3 lumen model.

I'm not sure if you can tell the single mode from the older models, though.

I have both of the Cree ones, and that is how I tell them apart.

My God, I stand corrected. My 2 stage KX2 has a B before the serial number. B before the Axxxxx. Very perceptive of you.
