Bigger split rings 1/2'' and up are a snap, usually doable with a thumbnail. When I do the tiny ones I usually use a small screwdriver or a small blade in a multi-tool. The problem is the smaller ones are slippery and harder to handle and the tool seems always on the wrong side of the opening, and metal to metal slips and slides off scratching the lanyard holes.
I always have popsicle sticks around for glue sticks, so I cut a slim wedge shape for a "spreader" and a slight notch but now the stick was in the way but the "wedgie" almost worked so I cut it to 3/4" and voila it did the job. I had a bit of hard rubber from a dried out hose and cut a tapering triangular wedge which worked even better as there was no slippage and allowed entry to the split ring from either side. The length was 1" and widest end was 1/4" with thickness of 3/16th or so tapering to a point. Any tapering triangle will work as it can be turned for more height.Think doorstop wedge the heel end cut to 2 triangles~ Isosceles ?
It solved a battle I was having on a small tailcap with a side entry. A small screwdriver helps initiate entry so the "wedgie" can finish the job. It worked for me. YMMV. Any other easy methods other than split ring pliers?
Good spreading....
